Close-Up: Noblesville High School

Noblesville High School is a comprehensive four-year school supported by a faculty of 109 classroom teachers, one media specialist, one technology specialist, four administrators, five counselors, two athletic directors, a student assistance program, a special needs program, and an array of support personnel.

The student population is 1,700. The average student/teacher ratio is 16/1.

NHS moved into a new high-tech, state-of-the-art facility in August of 1996. Voice, video, and data network access are provided by a combination of fiber and copper cabling. A media retrieval system includes the use of satellite dishes, cable TV, 20 regular VCRs plus two specialized VCRs that carry foreign language signals, eight laser disc players, two DVD players, and a slide converter. A distance learning studio expands learning opportunities for high school students and those at other schools in the district.

The high school features fourteen computer labs and two mobile computer labs, most of which are equipped with Macintosh computers. The labs include five business labs equipped with IBM compatible computers, one art lab, two industrial technology labs, plus a technology modular lab with IBM compatible computers, one foreign language lab that also includes a Sony audio lab, one English writing lab, one piano lab that includes Macintosh computers and Yamaha synthesizers, and one journalism mini-lab. There are 35 computers on stand-up carts for portable labs within the science classrooms, as well as several mobile work stations and laptop computers that are used within the classrooms. NHS is home to one of the best high school television and video production studios in the state of Indiana.

In all, the high school has nearly 930 computers and 180 printers for instructional use. The school is the center of a wide area network that electronically connects all the buildings in the school district.

Noblesville High School?s honors curriculum is augmented by Indiana University?s Advanced College Project, Advanced Placement courses, and weighted grades. The school also has curricular connections with Ameritech?s Vision Athena Distance Learning Project.

In June of 2002, 158 seniors were graduated from NHS with the distinction of having earned the Academic Honors Diploma.

The SAT mean score for the Class of 2001 was 1042. Seventy-nine percent of the eligible students took the battery of tests. The ACT test composite score was 23.1 with 21 percent of the class testing.
More than 80 percent of Noblesville's graduates continue their studies following high school. Advanced placement courses, college preparatory courses, and an honors program challenge and prepare these students for the future.

The Pacesetters program is located at the Conner Learning Center. It provides students, through alternative methods, the opportunity to obtain a high school diploma while preparing for the world of work. It is intended to meet the needs of those students at risk of not completing high school.
Extracurricular programs are plentiful at NHS. Students have an opportunity to participate in academic, service, athletic, and performing arts programs.

Noblesville High School is used extensively to provide a number of opportunities for the community. Current offerings include the only General Educational Developmental high school diploma equivalency program in the immediate area. Adult education classes in areas such as computers, crafts, investments, aquatics, and other programs of personal interest are available to Noblesville patrons. Community College of Indiana, IUPUI, and Ball State University also provide evening classes on the NHS campus.
