DECEMBER 14, 2001

PRINCIPAL'S POINTS - Today's Newsletter will be the last newsletter until Friday, January 11th because of our Christmas holiday vacation. Students will be dismissed at their regular dismissal times next Friday, December 21 and return to school on Tuesday, January 8, 2002, at our regular time.

Next Friday will also end our second nine weeks' grading period and first semester for all students. Report cards will be issued, along with student test results for grades 3 & 4, on Friday, January 11. Our January 2002 calendar, along with the school breakfast/lunch menus, will be sent home next Friday as well.

I would like to wish a MERRY CHRISTMAS and a joyous holiday season to our White River families. May we find in the season a time to grow in the spirit of the love and care of children.

NOBLESVILLE SCHOOLS' PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAYS INFORMATION - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - (Professional Development Days are also referred to as "Waiver Days," "Staff Development Days," or "Early Release Days.")

What are "Waiver Days?"
State law allows the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) to grant school corporations up to six (6) partial school days per year to be used for the purpose of providing professional development opportunities for teachers and staff. Since state law requires a minimum of 180 full school days, a "waiver" of the minimum time per day is required for the early release of students so teachers may attend training sessions or work on school improvement programs for part of the school day.

How are Waiver Days approved?
A school corporation must apply to the IDOE for approval to schedule these early dismissal days. Such a request must first be approved by the local school board. Next, Department of Education officials must review the application and recommend approval by the State Board of Education. The State Board makes the final determination for waiving the minimum length of day requirements and granting approval for the requested number of days.

Why are professional development programs necessary?
The new school improvement law called P.L. 221 requires a school corporation to plan for the professional growth and development of teachers to facilitate improved student academic performance. Every profession expects its members to maintain effective performance standards by continually improving job-related skills and knowledge. In order for teachers to best serve their students, they must be involved in training programs that provide up-to-date information on current research, methods and materials.

Why not schedule a couple of full days instead of six partial days?
This certainly would help parents with child care arrangements and provide schools with more consistent, effective implementation of professional development programs. Unfortunately, the IDOE does not allow schools to schedule full days as part of the 180 day minimum calendar. A maximum of two hours per school day is allowed for early dismissal of students with no more than six such days per year.

Why not schedule more days for teachers or have these programs on weekends or in the summer?
School personnel have requested funding for additional contract days from the state legislature for staff development many times in the past. The cost of funding those extra days statewide is very expensive and has so far not been approved. Many teachers and administrators attend conferences during weekends and school vacation times. Most inservice meetings, however, are scheduled during the school year and staff must go when the training is made available.

INDIANA ACADEMIC STANDARDS - Indiana's Academic Standards will be distributed to our students for your review on Monday of next week. Please make certain your child brings that booklet home. We would encourage you to take the time to read it carefully and save it for future reference. By understanding the expectations and standards of the Indiana Department of Education and our school, you will be better able to assist your child in being successful at his or her grade level. Please call our school office if you do not receive that booklet or if you have any questions.

APPLE READING CLUB SUMMARY - APPLE Readers and their families gathered in the White River Cafeteria on December 4th for a special hour full of family activities, reading, refreshments and visiting with other APPLE Reading families. Before decorating snowmen or gingerbread boys, there was much excitement and celebration as each APPLE Reader who had read 25 books since the last APPLE Reading Club meeting was awarded a "Beary Happy Reader" badge which was attached to their APPLE Reading book bag. The evening included a read aloud of the book The Gingerbread Boy.

We would like to share with you comments which were representative of the sentiments expressed at our school in response to the question, "Do you think the Daily Book Take Home Program helped your child develop a habit of reading each day and feel confident and successful with his/her reading?"

Yes, he enjoys listening to the stories, and if he thinks he can read it he will try. He loves the time we spend with him reading. He never complains when it's time to read.

Yes, it is helping. He is more interested in reading and is more anxious to read to me instead of me reading to him.

Yes, she always wants to read. She tries to read everything from books to signs.

It has definitely helped her confidence in herself, which definitely has helped her reading effort. I am impressed with the difference.

Yes, and we enjoy the time too. I also like seeing everyday how he is improving.

Yes, he is recognizing more words by sight and sound. Now when I am reading a book, he jumps right in and helps me read.

Many thanks to our APPLE Reading teachers, Mrs. Haas, Miss Hayworth and Miss Miller!

SCIENCE FAIR INFORMATION: The Science Fair is coming to White River Elementary! The White River Science Fair will be held on Thursday, February 7th during the school day. The Science Fair has been introduced to each class this week by Mrs. Boyd. Boys and girls who are interested in participating need to return the interest slip by Friday, December 21st to receive their packet. Please take the Christmas vacation to familiarize yourself with the science fair process and form a game plan for your child's experiment. Once you have an idea what your child's experiment will be, please fill out the information sheet in the packet and return it to school. Return of this information will serve as official entry to the 2002 Science Fair!

STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS - This year our White River Student Council has grown to 32 students. We would like to welcome Abby, Cameron, Tyler, Ashly, Gabby, Will, Kimmy, Max, Evan, Kayla, Ashley, Ellen, Kylie, Trevor, Derek, Trent, Jessie, Meghan, Elizabeth, Taylor, Jenna, Megan, Austin, Megan, Jacqui, Meg, Mary Charlotte, Lauren, Cassie, Jonathon, and Colton.

The students have been very busy thus far. They quickly responded to a request from the local Red Cross Food Pantry when they were told that their shelves were bare before Thanksgiving. They quickly put together a successful school-wide food drive. Student Council then sponsored a Chili Supper for the 9-11 Children's Relief Fund which culminated with a sumo-wrestling contest. One student from each grade level won the chance to wrestle Mr. Harvey. The response from our school was overwhelming. We were able to raise $1,155 that evening. The students worked very hard as did our parents. We thank them greatly for their support!

Finally, we have just completed our Christmas Food Drive in conjunction with the Noblesville Fire Department. Again your support was tremendous. Members from the fire department had to make numerous trips to collect the overflowing bags of food. We would like to thank everyone at White River for their continued support and wish them a happy holiday.

PRINCIPAL'S POINTS - Periodically, I have had inquiries as to the purpose of the Noblesville Schools' Community Advisory Council. Please allow me to briefly share with you a little information about this district-wide Council.

The Noblesville Schools' Community Advisory Council serves as an important link to the open line of communication between our community and all of the Noblesville Schools. The purpose of this Council is to maintain and improve communications among parents, citizens, students, teachers, administrators and members of the School Board under guidelines approved by the Board of School Trustees. The Council shall study issues of relevance to the community and provide recommendations to the Board of School Trustees.

White River is represented on the Council by two parents. Chris Sorensen and Janna Bullough serve our school through their attendance and participation in discussions, particularly as they relate to White River, at the monthly Council meetings. They also report back to our P.T.O. at our regularly scheduled meetings here at school. Mrs. Sorensen may be reached at 770-9298, and Mrs. Bullough may be reached at 773-8722. They will be happy to listen and direct you through the process of open communication. In cases of electrical, water, heating, weather or other emergencies, it may be necessary to send students home early. Please make plans NOW with your children should such a situation develop in the future.

IMPORTANT WEATHER INFORMATION - Frequently Asked Questions regarding a Two Hour Delay Day:

"What time does school start?" - Arrival time is 10:30 - 10:40 a.m.
"Will there be lunch?" - Yes, at the regular time. (No breakfast will be served.)
"Will clubs or special groups meet?" - No, all before school activities are canceled, except AYS.

PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL unless absolutely necessary. The school office must have telephone lines available for communications with other school officials and for emergency information. Thank you for your cooperation.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY NEXT WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5 - Please be reminded that our next staff development day here at White River will be next Wednesday, December 5. The Indiana Department of Education has given Noblesville Schools permission to dismiss students early for staff and program development activities. Students in grades 1-4 will be dismissed after lunch at 12:50 p.m. P.M. Early Childhood and P.M. Kindergarten classes will not attend classes on this day.

PARENTS: WE NEED YOUR HELP! - Have you had a change of telephone number, change of address, or change of employment since the beginning of this school year? Did you notify the school office of that change? We have had several situations already this year when a child became ill, injured, or missed a bus, and the telephone numbers on your child's enrollment form were either disconnected or changed. For us to contact you in emergency situations, you must provide the school with any changes that would affect our ability to contact you. Please send a note with any changes so we can update our records. Thanks for your assistance!

"HOOSIER PRIDE" DAY DECEMBER 11 - On Tuesday, December 11, Indiana will celebrate its birthday into statehood. HEARING SCREENINGS - Annual hearing screenings will be given to all kindergarten, first, and fourth grade students on December 6 and 7. All new students and students with special needs will also be screened. This screening is conducted annually in accordance with state guidelines and helps identify students with hearing difficulties. Parents will be notified of screening results.

NOVEMBER 16, 2001

PRINCIPAL'S POINTS - Please allow me to share a couple of praiseworthy notes in this week's Principal's Points for several outstanding efforts by members of our White River community.

A very special thank you goes out to our Veteran's Day committee, Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Wolf, Ms. Smeltzer, and Mrs. Hensley and the "Choir Connection" for an outstanding recognition program for our country's heroes. Mrs. Hensley led us in several patriotic songs and messages about this important day of recognition.

Our NCA Peer Review Team visited our school last week and many positive comments and commendations about our school were shared with our faculty and staff. This visit was an excellent measure of our progress with our school improvement plan. Our School Improvement Team is to be congratulated on a job well done representing the progress of the efforts to make our school better.

And finally, I would like to say thanks to our hard working teachers and support staff here at White River. Everyone has put forth a tremendous amount of effort to provide a positive, academically-sound environment. I am extremely proud of their hard work and their love for the profession.

Have a Restful Thanksgiving!
Mr. Harvey
