Notes from the Principal's Desk . . .
Christmas is just around the corner and December will be a busy month filled with many special events and activities for
our students. Hopefully, everyone will survive the three weeks before vacation. It can be very stressful . . . especially for parents and teachers. Our Christmas vacation will begin with the dismissal of school on Friday, December 22.

School Pictures and Information on Retakes
School picture packets were sent home earlier! Students new to Hazel Dell Elementary School since our first picture day
on October 25th and students who were absent will have the opportunity to have their pictures taken on Monday, December 4th. Other students may also have their pictures retaken if desired; however, the first picture packet must be returned. The pre-payment method will once again be used and students and/or parents should pick up the necessary information and order forms at the school office.

Winter Musical - December 7th
Please mark Thursday, December 7th on your calendar and plan to attend Hazel Dell's Winter Musical at 7:00 PM.
This year students in Grades 2 and 4 will be presenting "A Prehistoric Christmas." Once again, we would like to remind students to wear the following costumes: Grade 2 students should wear their PJ's. One of the songs is about getting slippers for Christmas so you may wear slippers if you have them. Otherwise, shoes are fine. Grade 4 students are going to be dinosaurs. You will wear green shirts (provided by the school) and dark jeans or dark pants. Don't forget your green painter's cap! Mrs. Morrow and our students have worked very hard on this year's program and we hope parents and friends will attend. See you on December 7th! Doors will open at 6:30 PM. Students should not arrive before this time! The program will be taped for delayed programming on HCTV - Channel 19. Date and times will be announced later.

Special Note: We will be collecting (non-perishable) food items for the Noblesville Fire Department. We are asking that each family please bring a donation to the Winter Musical. Your help with this worthy project assists local families who are in need of food items; making their holiday a little merrier and brighter! Thank You!

Santa's Gift Shop is Coming!
Santa's Gift Shop will be open at Hazel Dell from December 11 thru December 14. The PTO hosts the shop as a safe place for your child to Christmas shop "in secret" for family members and friends. Again this year, there will be a variety of items at affordable prices (50¢ -$10.00). Additional information will be sent home with students next week.

Reminder of PTO Meeting
Just a reminder . . . our next monthly PTO meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, December 13. The meeting will be held in the IMC and will begin at 7:00 PM. Babysitting is provided and we encourage your attendance and participation.

School Closing Procedure for Inclement Weather
With winter approaching, school may be closed, dismissed early or have a delayed starting time due to inclement weather conditions. The decision to close school is made by the Superintendent. If school is closed or delayed, this decision is usually made by 6:30 AM. The following television and radio stations will be notified: WTTV/Channel 4, WRTV/Channel 6, WISH/Channel 8, WTHR/Channel 13, WXIN/Channel 59, WGRL (93.9), WNDE/WFBQ (1260/94.7) WFMS (95.5), WENS (97.1), WZPL (99.5), WMYS (1430), WGLD (104.5), and WTPI (107.9). We also encourage all parents to make plans for their children if school is dismissed early, so that children will know what to do and/or where to go.

Special Note: Please be reminded that we are required to make up school days missed due to inclement weather. If this should occur, we will notify all parents of scheduled make-up days
through our school newsletter. Scheduled flex days are March 19, April 23, May 25, and June 1. Also, the week of June 4 through June 8 has been designated as additional flex days, if needed.

Science Fair Reminder
Any student (Grades K-4) who is interested in participating in Science Fair 2001 is encouraged to pick-up an
informational packet. This packet is now available in the school office. Meanwhile, students should be thinking about possible experiments and/or ideas. A good project takes lots of planning and hard work. Don't delay . . . get started today!

Hazel Dell Students Make A Difference!
The Student Council would like to thank all of you who opened your hearts and donated food to the Humane Society.
Once again, you have shown your thoughtfulness and generosity. Because of you, we took over 300 boxes, bags, and cans of food to feed these homeless animals. You didn't just bring in a can or a small box of food as we had expected. Most of you brought in 5 lb. bags, 10 lb. bags, cases and grocery sacks full of food. Some of you even brought in 18 lb. bags. All of this food will go a long way in feeding the many needy animals. What a wonderful "family" we are here at
Hazel Dell. Again, thank you very much!

Hazel Dell Student Recognized for Artwork
Congratulations to Ryan, a 4th Grade student in Ms. Kirkwood's classroom. Ryan has been selected as a finalist in the annual holiday card contest for the City of Noblesville. The winner will be announced at a special awards presentation on Monday, December 12, in the Common Council Chambers located at City Hall (16 S. 10th Street) at 7:00 PM. Friends and relatives are invited to attend. Way to go, Ryan!!!

Parents: We Need Your Help!
Have you had a change of telephone number, change of address, or change of employment since the beginning of this school year? Did you notify the school office of that change? We have had several situations already this year when a child became ill, injured, or missed a bus, and the telephone numbers on your child's enrollment form were either disconnected or changed. For us to contact you in emergency situations, you must provide the school with any changes that would affect our ability to contact you. Please send a note with any changes so we can update our records. Thanks for your assistance!

A special "thank you" to everyone who helped with and supported the Scholastic Book Fair. It was very successful. Along with enhancing the Media Center, it promotes reading at the same time!!!

We would also like to remind parents that students will not be having a gift exchange this year. Instead, students have been asked to donate to local service organizations that help those who need assistance during the holiday season. Students may continue to bring in suggested gifts through next week (check your green flyer sent home prior to Thanksgiving Vacation). Please contact your child's teacher if you have any further questions.

November 17, 2000

Notes from the Principal's Desk . . .

Today marks the halfway point for the 2nd Nine Week Grading Period. Students in Grades 2-4 will be receiving their
Mid-Term Progress Report next Wednesday (November 22). Please discuss with your child his or her progress report. If you have questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher or Mr. Land. The grading period will end on December 22, 2000.

Also, I want to remind parents and students of our upcoming Thanksgiving Vacation . . . a time to be with family and with friends. School will not be in session on Thursday, November 23 or Friday, November 24. Enjoy your vacation!

It's hard to believe but the holiday season will soon be upon us. As always, it will be a very busy and usually hectic time of year for everyone. Hazel Dell students will be having a gift exchange this year during their classroom holiday parties. However, it won't be your traditional gift exchange. We have decided upon a "book exchange" where students will be exchanging books (with an approximate cost of $3.00 or $4.00). The upcoming Book Fair and the classroom book orders through teachers are good sources for quality, yet inexpensive books. At the same time, students will have the opportunity to contribute to a local charity to help those that are less fortunate. For each $1.00 donation, students will receive a "yellow star" to display with their name. We hope to cover the large bulletin board in the main lobby with these yellow stars. Watch for more information in the next few weeks!

Parents Needed for Textbook Evaluation Committee
Reading and handwriting textbooks and approved books and materials to be used in Noblesville Schools during 2001-2007 will be adopted by the Board of School Trustees next spring. To provide information for the school board and to assist them in their final decision, a committee composed of administrators, teachers, and parents will review and evaluate state adopted textbooks and approved books and materials. The committee will submit a written recommendation to the superintendent of schools. Parents wishing to serve Noblesville Schools as a member of the textbook evaluation committee are requested to contact the school office, 867-0021, no later than December 1.

School Closing Procedure for Inclement Weather

Annual TeleAuction - November 19th
Hamilton County's "Habitat for Humanity" TeleAuction is scheduled to air on November 19. This is their major
fundraising event of the year. Viewers of HCTV Channel 19 Cable TV will have the unique opportunity to bid on approximately 500 items being auctioned off by telephone in the comfort of their own home. A wide variety of items donated generously by local businesses will be available. Items include jewelry, merchandise of hand crafted and other unique gifts, collectibles, Christmas decorations, and gift certificates for business services such as beauty salons, auto care, pet care, equipment repair, and restaurants. This is a perfect time not only to do your Christmas shopping, but to contribute to "Habitat for Humanity". Thanks to the commitment of many volunteers, organizations, local businesses and corporate sponsors. The TeleAuction is successful in raising funds that enable us to provide low-income residents with a simple, decent place to live and ultimately rid the county of sub-standard housing.

Notes from the Principal's Desk . . .

Last year, Hazel Dell became a member of the North Central Association of Commission on Schools. We are now beginning the accreditation process by gathering and analyzing various data to create a school performance profile. This will eventually lead to the development of a school improvement plan for Hazel Dell. As a part of this process, we are seeking parents who would be interested in serving on our school committees. If you have an interest, experience, or time to volunteer as a Hazel Dell parent, we would appreciate your assistance. Please contact me at school (867-0021) if you are interested. Your participation is an integral part of our efforts to improve. As good as we are, we can always get better!

Mr. Land

to all parents of Hazel Dell students. Babysitting will be provided if desired or needed. Plan now to attend!

Staff Development Day #3 - Early Dismissal
Please be reminded that Thursday, November 16, will be an early dismissal day. As mentioned earlier, the Indiana Department of Education has given Noblesville Schools permission to dismiss students early for staff and program development activities. School will be dismissed after lunch at 12:50 PM. Afternoon classes for Kindergarten and Early Childhood will not meet.

Grandparents Day at Hazel Dell - November 17
To help honor and recognize these very important people in the lives of our students, we have designated Friday, November 17 as "Grandparents Day at Hazel Dell." We would like to invite interested grandparents to visit our school on this special day from 9:00-10:30 AM. (PM Kindergarten and Early Childhood grandparents are welcome to attend in the afternoon.) As always, we look forward to this special event. Please watch for more specific information that will be coming home with students next week.

Scholastic Book Fair is Coming!
The Scholastic Book Fair will be at Hazel Dell on November 20, 21, and 22. Friday, November 17 will be a preview
day for students; however, grandparents will be able to purchase books on this day. There will be all kinds of great, new books . . . from spine-tingling mysteries, high-action adventures, and sports books to stories about friendship, family, and kids. Plus award-winning titles, books by your favorite authors, posters, and other fun stuff. The Book Fair has always been a popular event for students, parent, and grandparents. The Book Fair will be held (in Room 11) from 9:00-12:00
and from 1:00-3:00 each day. Help support our Media Center and promote reading at the same time!

*** If you would like to help with the Book Fair (assist students, cashier, etc.), please call Rhonda Crink at 867-1086.

Attention Fathers!!!
Are you interested in some physical exercise during the upcoming winter months? If so, we encourage you to join our
"Fathers Night Out" on Tuesday evenings (beginning November 7th) at 7:00 PM. Nothing formal, just an opportunity for our fathers and any other interested friends to play some basketball and have a good time. Please note this is an ADULT ONLY activity. Give it a try!

Help Needed in Kitchen/Cafeteria
We are looking for individuals interested in substituting in the kitchen/cafeteria at Hazel Dell. Responsibilities would include assisting in serving meals, helping in the dishroom, meal preparation, etc. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Mrs. Zook at 867-0021.

Winter Dress/Inside Recess Policy
With the winter season just around the corner, attention needs to be given to proper school dress for our students. Heavy winter coats, hats that cover the ears, mittens or gloves and leather-type shoes are most appropriate. Rubber, leather, or insulated boots are also good. Not only are these items necessary for the winter conditions going to and from school, but they are essential for outside recess.

We are going to encourage outside recess for all of our students, even though some daily conditions may allow us to only be outside for just a portion of the regular recess time. Of course, should temperatures and/or wind chill become extreme, we will not go out at all during those days. Generally, we will use 0? F as a guideline. Requests from parents for their child to stay inside during cold weather, particularly after an illness will be honored with limitations. However, if these requests become habitual, we will ask that a doctor's statement be obtained in order for a child to stay inside for long periods of time. Medical research has shown that daily periods of fresh air and exercise contribute to a more healthy child, both physically and mentally. If you have questions regarding this policy, please contact the school office.

School Closing Procedure for Inclement Weather
With winter approaching, school may be closed, dismissed early or have a delayed starting time (as we've already experienced with the fog) due to inclement weather conditions.

Our school newsletter is being sent home on Wednesday of this week since there will be no school tomorrow or Friday due to Fall Vacation. Let's hope the weather is nice so everyone can enjoy this short vacation before winter arrives! School will resume its regular schedule on Monday, October 23.

A special note of thanks and appreciation should be extended to those parents who attended our Parent-Teacher Conferences. I hope the conferences were informative and helpful in understanding your child?s progress in school as well as individual strengths and weaknesses. I also appreciate the efforts and time spent by our teaching staff in preparation for the conferences. Through our joint efforts, we will continue to provide excellent educational opportunities for our students at Hazel Dell Elementary School!

Once again, a big "thank you" should be extended to all students and parents for a job well done! Our PTO Fundraiser has been successful due to your efforts and your support. Parent Reminder: All Book Rental is now DUE!

Emergency Procedures at Hazel Dell

Hazel Dell has always practiced fire and storm drills as required by law. Beginning this year, in order to be prepared for any emergency, we will be conducting additional drills for emergencies such as bomb threats, violent intruders, and hostage situations, etc. Some of these procedures will involve students learning new safety measures. Please keep in mind this is not due to any specific problems or concerns we have here at Hazel Dell. However, with more and more intrusions of our schools across the country, we want our parents to be aware that we are taking every precaution possible to provide a safe and secure environment for all students and staff.

... our first PTO Movie Night is November 3rd featuring "Chicken Run" ...
Look for more information to come home next week!

Notes from the Principal's Desk . . .

Next Friday (October 13) marks the end of our first nine week grading period for students. Report cards for students in Grades 1-4 will be issued at our upcoming parent-teacher conferences.

Realizing that most of you have busy schedules, I personally want to ask that you make every effort to attend the parent-teacher conferences. This is an opportunity for you to gain a better understanding of your child's educational progress along with specific strengths and weaknesses. Conferences are important and can be very helpful to both the parent and teacher. Specific conference times for your child(ren) are being sent home today. By working together, we can provide the best possible education for our students at Hazel Dell!

SPECIAL NOTE: Students in grades 1-4 will be dismissed at 11:40 AM on both Tuesday, October 17 and Wednesday, October 18. Please also note that kindergarten students will attend school on October 17; however, there will be no bus transportation for PM students. Only morning kindergarten students will attend school on October 18. If you have any questions, please Contact your child's teacher or call the school office at 867-0021.

Fire Prevention Week . . . October 8-14, 2000
The Noblesville Fire Department will be hosting an Open House at Station #71 on October 8 from 12:00 PM until 4:00 PM. Citizens of Noblesville and Noblesville Township will be able to tour the station, see the fire trucks/apparatus and visit with members of our department. In addition, residents are welcome to tour the station in their neighborhood and visit with the professional firefighters. Fire Prevention is a major factor in educating our youth; therefore, we encourage families to either attend the Open House on October 8 or tour any of the neighborhood stations during Fire Prevention Week.

Fall Vacation
Our Fall Vacation is scheduled for Thursday, October 19 and Friday, October 20 and school will not be in session. Let's hope the weather is nice so everyone can enjoy this short vacation before winter arrives! School will resume its regular schedule on Monday, October 23.

CHAMPS (Children Achieving A More Peaceful School)
CHAMPS is a group of 4th grade students, selected by their classmates, who will be trained to help other students at school resolve certain minor, non-physical disputes. There will be ten CHAMPS at Hazel Dell who will work in pairs during their lunch recess times, as scheduled by the counselor. Students in conflict can be referred to a CHAMPS session by the principal, counselor, teachers, or themselves. The problem-solving process is voluntary; no one is forced to attend a session. CHAMPS are mediators, not judges or disciplinarians. They help students through a 4 step process where ideas are brainstormed and solutions agreed upon. The following students have been selected to serve as a CHAMPS mediator: Greg, Olivia, Stephen, Blake Bryan Stephanie, Mitch, Jonelle, Carrie, and Elizabeth. Congratulations!

School Pictures . . . Smile!
Student pictures will be taken on Wednesday, October 25 for all students in grades K-4 and Early Childhood. Please remember . . . money must accompany the order on
picture day and students are asked to wear their best smile! Note: All students should come dressed for pictures as we will take everyone's picture for the yearbook even if individual school pictures are not ordered.

Destination ImagiNation
An informational meeting will be held on Monday, October 16 at 7:00 PM in the Noblesville High School cafeteria to recruit team members for Destination ImagiNation (formerly known as Odyssey of the Mind). Destination ImagiNation is an international creative problem solving competition for students in Grades K-12.
