Mr. McDaniel's Memo
Random Acts of Kindness Week November 6 - 13,
Random Acts of Kindness Week is an international celebration dedicated to reminding everyone of the positive benefits and effects of kindness. Kindness is good for both the giver and the person receiving the kind gesture. A compliment, a favor, or help provided makes everyone feel like better people. Once someone does a generous deed for another, a series of kind acts is set in motion and kindness repeats across the community. The year 2000 marks the Sixth Annual Random Acts of Kindness Week, encompassing over 5000 communities and 35 countries that will participate with local Kindness events. Although every week should include seven days of doing kind things for others, we at Stony Creek would like to focus on the Kids Caring and Sharing Program the next three weeks as one way to "pay it forward!"

Kids Caring and Sharing - Helping Hoosier Kids!
The funds raised through Riley Hospital's Kids Caring & Sharing Program stay right here in Indiana to help Hoosier children. This is not always the case when raising money for national charities. When students participate, they invest in their own healthcare and make a difference for thousands of other children, including classmates and neighbors. That is what Kids Caring & Sharing for Riley Hospital is all about - kids helping kids! Kids Caring & Sharing for Riley Hospital is a special project of the Indiana Association of School Principals, and promoted by the Indiana Association of Student Councils and the Indiana Congress of Parents and Teachers. Students will be receiving more information this week regarding our Kids Caring and Sharing Program which will begin next week and run through the month of November.

Students' and Parents' Points to Ponder:
"That's me. That's three people. And I'm going to help them."

What if someone did you a favor, something big, something you couldn't do on your own, and instead of paying it back, you paid it forward to three people? And the next day, they each paid it forward to three more. And the day after that, those 27 people each paid it forward to another three. And each day, everyone in turn paid it forward to three more, in two weeks, that comes to 4,782,969 people.

Start a revolution--it begins with you! The premise of the novel and new movie "Pay It Forward" is one that any person can implement in his or her own life, at any time. It begins with doing a favor for another person-- without any expectation of being paid back. Indeed one would request that the recipient of that favor do the same for someone else: ideally for three other people. The unconditional favors can be large or small. It doesn't have to be a big thing. It can just seem that way, depending on whom you do it for.

http://www.actsofkindness.org/ http://www.payitforwardfoundation.com/

We will be having a special puppet show on Tuesday, November 7, at 2:00 p.m. for all students to help celebrate both Random Acts of Kindness Week and our Kids Caring and Sharing Project. Morning kindergarten and Early Childhood students are invited to attend with their parents from 2:00 ?2:30 p.m. (Parents must provide transportation both ways.) Mr. Phil Davis, Elementary Principal from Mount Comfort Elementary School, will bring his friends JoJo and Jody plus two animal buddies to talk about kindness and caring.

Mr. McDaniel's Memo
Important Weather Information
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions regarding a Two Hour Delay Day:

- "What time will the school bus be here?" - Exactly two hours after the time the student normally gets picked up. (8:07 a.m. = 10:07 a.m.)
- "What time does school start?" - Arrival time is 10:30 ? 10:40 a.m.
- "Will there be lunch?" - Yes, at the regular time. (No breakfast will be served.)
- "Will clubs or special groups meet?" - No, all before school activities are canceled, except AYS.
- "Will school be canceled?" - If the weather should get worse after a delay and school is canceled, it will be announced on radio and television stations as soon as possible.

PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL unless absolutely necessary. The school office must have telephone lines available for communications with other school officials and for emergency information.

IMPORTANT: Should special additional information be required for a school delay or closing, a message will be placed on the recording of the school's voice mail system. After several rings, a greeting of about 10 seconds will play. THE NEW INFORMATION WILL FOLLOW IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE GREETING.

Please note: Sometimes, a T.V. or radio station will not announce or print the correct information as given to them by school officials. The school corporation has no control over these errors. When in doubt, please check two or more stations to see that the same information is listed. Also, should school be canceled after a two-hour delay is announced, some stations are much quicker at posting that information than others. It is therefore always a good idea to check at least two sources on a frequent basis to have the best up-to-date information. Thank you for your cooperation.

Inclement Weather/School Closings
As this week has shown us, inclement weather can occur during any time of the year causing an interference with our normal schedule. Please keep in mind that school delays and closings will be broadcast over numerous radio/television stations. Please tune to any of the following stations for updates on Noblesville Schools:

Radio: FM WGRL (93.9), WFBQ (94.7), WFMS (95.5), WENS (97.1), WZPL (99.5), WGLD (104.5), or WTPI (107.9); AM WNDE (1260), WMYS (1430)

Television: WRTV (6) / WTTV (4); WISH (8); WTHR (13); or WXIN (59).

REMINDER: There can be a wide-variety of reasons that our schools may have to be dismissed early for an emergency situation. In cases of electrical, water, heating, weather, or other emergencies, it may be necessary to send students home early. Please make plans NOW with your children should such a situation develop in the future.

***** Your child will be bringing home special information next week for situations involving an unexpected early dismissal from school. Please make sure you complete it and return to school as soon as possible. *****

Riley Hospital Kids Caring and Sharing
In the last seven years that Stony Creek has participated in this program, our school has raised $10,289.44 for the children of Riley Hospital. This averages about $1,469 per year. Last year, we raised $859.95. Let's set a goal of at least $1,500 for this year! If every child brought only one dollar a week for the three weeks we will run the program in November and the three weeks in February, we would raise $2,796 for this great project. Let's Do It MUSTANGS!

Parents' Points to Ponder:
Tobacco is called the "gateway" drug for children. Most individuals who use other drugs start with smoking cigarettes. Here are some facts you should know:
- Every day, 3,000 children become regular smokers! That's more than one million new children smokers a year.
- One out of three children who smoke will die from smoking-related illnesses.
- 3 out of 4 teens who are daily smokers say they keep smoking because it is hard to quit.
- Over 434,000 Americans die each year from tobacco-related diseases - that's more than AIDS, murder, suicide, illegal drugs, car accidents, alcohol, and fires combined!
- According to the Surgeon General's Report, compared to non-smokers, kids who smoke are: three times more likely to use alcohol; eight times more likely to smoke marijuana; and twenty-two times more likely to use cocaine.
- Cigarette smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals and over 400 poisons.
Second-hand smoke is a danger to your child.
- Remind your child, "BE SMART, DON'T START!"

WINTER DRESS/INSIDE RECESS POLICY
With the winter season just around the corner, attention needs to be given to proper dress for our students. Heavy winter coats, hats that cover ears, mittens or gloves, and leather-type shoes are most appropriate. Rubber, leather, or insulated boots are also good. Not only are these items necessary for the winter conditions of going to and from school, but they are essential for outside recess.

We are going to encourage outside recess for all students, even though some daily conditions may allow us to only be outside for just a portion of the regular recess time. Of course, should temperatures and/or wind chill become extreme, we will not go out at all during those days. Generally, we will use zero degrees Fshrenheit as a guideline. Requests from parents for their child to stay inside during cold weather, particularly after an illness will be honored with limitations. However, if these requests become habitual, we will ask that a doctor's statement be obtained in order for a child to stay inside for long periods of time. Medical research has shown that daily periods of fresh air and exercise contribute to a more healthy child, both physically and mentally. If you have any questions regarding this policy, please contact the school office. Thank you.

Did You Know????
Children who have a television in their bedrooms watch 5.5 more hours of T.V. a week, have less family interaction, and have worse grades (on the average) than those who don't, according to a recent survey by the national Institute on Media and Family. The survey discovered that children without televisions in their bedrooms read more books and engage in more activities that don't involve electronic media. For more information, visit their web sight at www.mediafamily.org.

Mr. McDaniel's Memo
Safety Drills
The famous motto of the Boy Scouts of America is "Be Prepared." For years, schools have been required by law to be prepared for fire or tornado emergencies by practicing drills on a regular basis. In the area of school safety, it is also important for us to be prepared and have a plan when other emergencies might develop. Our corporation has adopted a comprehensive school safety plan and is implementing three additional procedures for dealing with the unexpected. We will be practicing these new procedures - evacuating the building; placing the school on alert in case of anticipated problems; and securing students in classrooms or other areas - with drills on a regular basis. Our teachers and staff have met to review these plans and procedures. In the near future, we will be practicing these drills with students, just as we have in the past for the possibility of a fire or tornado. Our purpose is not to alarm or scare anyone, it is only to "be prepared"! Please contact me if you have any questions.

America's Safe Schools Week October 15 - 21
This week is America's Safe School Week and is sponsored by the National School Safety Center, the nation's governors, the Indiana Department of Education and many local and regional organizations. Kenneth S. Trump, a nationally recognized expert in the area of school safety, says the following about school safety: "School safety requires a multifaceted approach. Schools must work with students, parents, police, businesses, political officials, and other community leaders to develop effective intervention and prevention strategies for maintaining safe schools and safe communities." Thanks to everyone at Stony Creek who help make student safety a top priority and for your cooperation with our school safety procedures.

Red Ribbon Week October 23 - 31
The national Red Ribbon Week is scheduled for October 23 - 31. Red Ribbons are a symbol of unity against the illegal use of drugs. This public display came about in response to the tragic 1985 murder of Federal Drug Enforcement Administration Agent Enrique Camarena while he was investigating Mexican drug traffickers. At that time, angry parent groups and others began wearing red ribbons to take a public stand against the illegal use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs and to show their support of drug-free youth.

The students, parents, and staff of Stony Creek Elementary School will also be taking a stand against drug abuse this year by participating in various Red Ribbon Week activities. One of the highlights of this week will be a 'Family Writing Project.' This is not a contest, but an optional opportunity for families to work together to discuss good and bad choices that need to be made when children are faced with the possibility of making decisions about using drugs. After these home discussions, families are then encouraged to write a story or essay together to show their stand against drugs. We will then display these stories in our school and read some of them during morning and afternoon announcements. Your child may submit something anytime next week. Please consider joining your child in thinking and writing about this important issue. Thank you for your cooperation and support.

Volunteer Data Sheet
A reminder to parents that as part of School Board Policy #3121, an individual desiring to help as a volunteer in Noblesville Schools must complete a "Volunteer Data Sheet." This information will be kept on record to help us best use your talents to help our students. This form will also be used as a permission slip for a Criminal History Records check, required if you plan to volunteer in our schools for field trips and/or other school activities when you would have sole care, custody or control over students. We have been experiencing long delays in the background check process from the Indiana State Police. Even if you turn your application in several weeks before an activity, we cannot guarantee that it will be processed in time by the State Police to have you approved. We apologize for this situation and hope you understand how part of this process may be delayed.

Riley Hospital Kids Caring and Sharing
One of the greatest resources for children in Indiana is the Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. It serves thousands of children from our state and around the country. Our student council will once again be sponsoring a project to help raise money to support Riley Hospital's programs. We will do our "hat" program again this year in November and February where students will have the chance to be "assistants" to some of our teachers and staff. Please be watching future Mustang Mails for more information and interesting facts about the Kids Caring and Sharing Program sponsored state-wide by the Indiana Association of School Principals.

Thanks PTO!
A very special thank you to all parents who cooked, baked, and/or donated the food for our parent-teacher conference day. It was a wonderful treat and greatly appreciated! Thanks also to all parents who were able to meet with your child's teacher yesterday. We are glad that you took the time to be involved and concerned. As always, please let us know when you would like other opportunities to meet and discuss your child?s progress in school.

Habitat for Humanity of Hamilton County
The ninth annual "teleauction" fund-raising event for Habitat for Humanity of Hamilton County will air on Sunday, November 19, 2000. This televised auction will be on HCTV channel 19 on cable T.V. from 1:00 p.m. ? 9:00 p.m. Please call John Krom at 773-5232 or Channel 19 at 776-0270 for questions or more information.

Cross Country Race Results
Thank you for supporting the elementary cross-country program last Saturday. It was a beautiful day and a great day for a run. This was 14th year for this race with the largest group of participants ever totaling 194 runners competing! Stony Creek had the best percentage and most runners this year with 63. We will have the traveling trophy to display until next year. White River followed closely behind with 55. Congratulations Mustangs!

Did You Know????
The average annual admissions for Riley Hospital for Children is 7,764 (256 from Hamilton County) and 128,232 outpatient visits (5,351 from Hamilton County.)

Parents' Points to Ponder:
The best inheritance parents can give to their children is a few minutes of their time each day.

October 13, 2000

Mr. McDaniel's Memo
Parent/Teacher Conferences:

You should be getting your time for Parent / Teacher Conferences from your child's teacher soon. This time is reserved for you to discuss your child's report card, classroom progress, and individual strengths and areas in need of improvements. Due to the number of conferences that must be scheduled in a short period of time, we are asking each parent to please be on time for your conference and limit your time with the teacher to a maximum of 15 minutes. Should you need more time to discuss additional items or concerns, teachers would be glad to schedule another time to do so as soon as possible. Once one conference goes past the scheduled 15 minutes, all other conferences for the rest of the day are delayed. We know several parents also have limited time to be away from work and other responsibilities, and we ask your cooperation in helping teachers and other parents stay on schedule.
Here are a couple of tips for a successful parent/teacher conference:
- BE PREPARED - Write down a few notes and questions about topics you would like to discuss. For example, you may want to talk about homework, study habits, or behavior.
- TALK WITH YOUR CHILD - Before your conference, ask your child if there is anything he or she would like you to talk about with the teacher. Discuss topics covered in the conference afterwards, too.

Dates To Remember
- Parent / Teacher Conferences - Tuesday, Oct. 17, afternoon and early evening.

I apologize for the error and for any inconvenience. There will be no kindergarten classes on the 18th.

Thanks Brownie Troop #1785
A special thank you goes out to our local Brownie Troop #1785 for their efforts since last spring with the potted plants in front of the school by the sign. We appreciate the work of the girls and their leaders, Mrs. Brinegar and Mrs. Mercer, in helping make our school look so nice by the front entrance. Good Job Brownies!

Parents' Points to Ponder:
Report Cards:

Report cards will be sent home soon with all students. This sometimes can be a period of stress or worry for both students and parents. A report card is just one measure of how your child is doing in school. A child with all good grades still has many things to learn. A child with lower grades still has lots of strengths to consider. Instead of just focusing on grades, ask your child some of the following questions:
- What did you learn this grading period (in reading, math, social studies, etc.)?
- What things were... Easy? Hard? Most Enjoyable?
- What are some things you can do differently next time? (Set goals.)
- What help do you need from your teacher or parents?
F.Y.I. - In addition to the traditional A, B, C... grades, the following letter codes are sometimes used : E = Excellent S = Satisfactory; NI = Needs Improvement; and * Special Standards = Special Education Class.

Did You Know????
The RAND report ranks Indiana as one of the leading states in improving its public schools. Indiana is among the top four states in the nation in raising students' mathematics scores, with gains about twice as great as the national average, the respected think tank reported. Its study also ranks Indiana among the top eight states in raising the academic performance of students from similar racial and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Stony Creek "CHAMPS"
Noblesville Schools are continuing a student conflict-management program called "CHAMPS" (Children Achieving a More Peaceful School.) CHAMPS are a group of 4th grade students, selected by their classmates, trained to help other students at school resolve certain minor, non-physical disputes. There are eight CHAMPS per school who will work in pairs during their lunch recess times, as scheduled by the counselor. Students in conflict can be referred to a CHAMPS session by the principal, counselor, teachers, or themselves. The problem-solving process is voluntary: no one is forced to attend a session. CHAMPS are mediators, not judges or disciplinarians. They help students through a 4-step process where ideas are brainstormed and solutions agreed upon. Congratulations to this year?s 4th grade CHAMPS: Emily, Andrew, Chelsey, Ellen, Nathan, Nick, Allie, Kylie, Caroline, and Taylor. Mrs. Terri Park, Stony Creek Counselor, is the facilitator for this program.

Destination ImagiNation:
Noblesville Creative Problem Solving Assoc. will be holding an informational meeting on Monday, October 16, at 7:00 p.m. in the Noblesville High School Cafeteria to recruit members for Destination ImagiNation teams. Destination ImagiNation - formerly known as Odyssey of the Mind is an international creative problem solving competition for students in grades K-12. Students learn brainstorming techniques, improvisation skills and develop teamwork skills while working together on teams to solve a challenge. Teams enhance their solution by writing a play and making their own costumes and props. Each challenge also contains technical elements that must be incorporated into the presentation. Although all of the work must be done by the students only, parents will be needed to be team managers to help facilitate the team?s progress.

National School Lunch Week & Food Services Personnel Week - October 9-13
Let's take time to thank everyone who helps make our school a great place to eat! The new changes and improvements, which have been implemented, have taken a lot of extra effort on the part of the cafeteria staff. We appreciate their hard work and extra efforts all year long!

PTO News
The PTO is no longer collecting Campbell labels. A huge amount of labels were needed to exchange for even small, inexpensive items. The time necessary to a cut, count, bind, and mail the labels was not worth the trouble. (Not to mention the shipping costs which almost wiped out the value of the items!)

PLEASE NOTE: We will still be collecting General Mills Box Tops for Education. These labels are worth cash to your PTO and school. Please look for Box Tops logos on these General Mills products! Big G Cereals Betty Crocker Fruit Snack Lloyd's Barbeque Buckets Betty Crocker Products Yoplait Yogurt For more information, visit their web site at http://www.boxtops4education.com.

You can help the PTO volunteers by cutting the small label off the box top to just the size of the label. Please collect them in a small plastic bag so none will be lost. Your help and support are greatly appreciated.

Mr. McDaniel's Memo
All parents are interested in helping their children do well in school. The best way to do that is to help them improve their reading skills. An excellent way to do that is to attend tonight's special program for parents. Jody reminds us all, educators and parents alike, of the true significance of our work.
Love, Jody's Teacher
