Mr. McDaniel's Memo
Awesome attendance last Wednesday! Thanks for everyone's great cooperation and for making education your top priority.
Hearing Screening Time Tomorrow and Wednesday
Mrs. Shelhamer would like to let you know that all kindergarten, first grade, and fourth grade students as well as special needs students will be screened for auditory or hearing acuity on November 27 and 28. This screening is routinely completed this time of year so possible problems can be identified and corrected. This screening is done by a Speech/Language Pathologist and in no way replaces the complete medical evaluation given by your physician, but is a fair assessment of your child's auditory acuity. If you do not wish that your child be screened or if you have any special concerns, please call the office and leave a message for Mrs. Shelhamer, and she will get back to you just as soon as possible.
4th Grade Social Health Program Tomorrow
The annual developmental health video program for all fourth grade students will be presented on Tuesday, November 27, at 1:30 or 2:30 p.m. A fourth grade classroom teacher, Mrs. Park, or Mr. McDaniel will be present during each session at Stony Creek.

If you have any questions, please call Janice Ramey at 770-9013.
Visitor I.D. Badges

Indiana's Academic Standards
Indiana's Academic Standards will be distributed to our students for your review this week. Please make sure your child brings that booklet home. We would encourage you to take the time to read it carefully and save it for future reference. By understanding the expectations and standards of the Indiana Department of Education and our school, you will be better able to assist your child in being successful at his or her grade level. Please call the office if you do not receive that booklet or have any questions.
Parents' Points to Ponder:
"We make a living by what we get - We make a life by what we give."
I am very proud of the efforts of everyone here for truly making this a special time of the year by participating in the following holiday projects in lieu of gift exchanges:
Kindergarten classes are collecting hats and mittens for needy children and distributing them to students in some of the Noblesville Schools, including Stony Creek.
First Grade students will be donating new toys to the fire department.
Second graders are making donations to the Humane Shelter again this year.
Third grade children will be contributing items, such as small cars, card games, school supplies, small stuffed animals, etc., to the Hamilton County Chapter of the Red Cross.
Fourth graders are helping collect donations for Riley Hospital; and
All of Stony Creek School is also participating in the Fire Department's food drive. (Starting TODAY!)

Mr. McDaniel's Memo
Inclement Weather/School Closings
Inclement weather can occur during any time of the year causing an interference with our normal schedule. Please keep in mind that school delays and closings will be broadcast over numerous radio/television stations. Please tune to any of the following stations for updates on Noblesville Schools:
Radio: FM WGRL (93.9), WFBQ (94.7), WFMS (95.5), WENS (97.1), WZPL (99.5), WGLD (104.5), or WTPI (107.9); AM WNDE (1260), WMYS (1430)
Television: WRTV (6) / WTTV (4); WISH (8); WTHR (13); or WXIN (59).
REMINDER: There can be a wide-variety of reasons that our schools may have to be dismissed early for an emergency situation. In cases of electrical, water, heating, weather, or other emergencies, it may be necessary to send students home early. Please make plans NOW with your children should such a situation develop in the future.
Important Weather Information
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions regarding a Two Hour Delay Day:
"What time will the school bus be here?" - Exactly two hours after the time the student normally gets picked up. (8:07 a.m. = 10:07 a.m.)
"What time does school start?" - Arrival time is 10:30 ? 10:40 a.m.
"Will there be lunch?" - Yes, at the regular time. (No breakfast will be served.)
"Will clubs or special groups meet?" - No, all before school activities are canceled, except AYS.
"Will school be canceled?" - If the weather should get worse after a delay and school is canceled, it will be announced on radio and television stations as soon as possible.
PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL unless absolutely necessary. The school office must have telephone lines available for communications with other school officials and for emergency information.
IMPORTANT - WHEN THE SCHOOL OFFICE IS CLOSED: Should special additional information be required for a school delay or closing, a message will be placed on the recording of the school's voice mail system. After several rings, a greeting of about 10 seconds will play. The new information will follow immediately after the greeting.
Please note: Sometimes, a T.V. or radio station will not announce or print the correct information as given to them by school officials. The school corporation has no control over these errors. When in doubt, please check two or more stations to see that the same information is listed. Also, should school be canceled after a two-hour delay is announced, some stations are much quicker at posting that information than others. It is therefore always a good idea to check at least two sources on a frequent basis to have the best up-to-date information. Thank you for your cooperation.

We have a number of recent teacher and staff changes that I would like to announce. First, we want to welcome Ann Lemna to our Early Childhood Program as a new instructional assistant. We want to thank Tammy Elmore-Dove for her wonderful assistance with Mrs. Huff's first grade classroom. Starting today, Jennifer Shelton, our Title I Apple Reading Teacher, will be in that assignment until Mrs. Huff's return. We wish Julie Pittman the best as she waits for her new baby to arrive soon. Natalie Flinn, a former Title I teacher and substitute teacher at White River, will complete the school year in that classroom.
Please join me in welcoming these individuals into our Stony Creek Family!

Congratulations goes out to this year's Stony Creek Spell Bowl Team. They did an outstanding job representing our school at this year's area competition. The purpose of the Hoosier Spell Bowl is to promote the importance of spelling in all disciplines, to increase positive public support toward academic efforts, and to encourage enthusiastic communication between school and community. Their team coach was Mr. Kirkpatrick. Thanks also goes to Mrs. Learned for her help on the night of the program. Great Job Mustangs!

Mr. McDaniel's Memo
A very special thank you goes out to all grandparents and special persons who visited with us last Friday. It was a joy and pleasure to see so many people gather together to help celebrate Veterans Day and to give them the opportunity to see first hand our top quality educational programs in action. We appreciate Mrs. Werbe's hard work with the wonderful music program.
Our NCA Peer Review Team visit was a productive and rewarding experience for us all. The team members listed several very positive commendations about our School Profile and School Improvement Plan. They offered a few recommendations regarding activities we can do to make our great school even better. We video taped their exit report and will show it to all teachers and staff today during our waiver day work session. It will also be shown for any interested parents and community members at our second School Improvement Public Forum on Thursday, December 6, at 7:00 p.m. in the media center.

Address or Telephone Number Changes???
Have you had a change of telephone number, change of address, or change of employment since the beginning of this school year? Did you notify the school office of that change? We have had situations already this year when a child became ill, injured, or missed a bus, and the telephone numbers on your child's enrollment form were either disconnected or changed. For us to contact you in emergency situations, you must provide the school with any changes that would affect our ability to contact you. Please call the office or send a note with any changes immediately to the office so that we can update our records. Thanks for your assistance!
Coat Check
Please remind students to make certain they are getting the right coats, jackets, etc. We already have had a few reports of missing cold weather apparel this school year. Parents: Please label your children's belongings by putting names on coats, hats, etc. to help insure that the right owner has the correct piece of clothing. Thanks for your cooperation.
Parents' Points to Ponder
"One"
As the soot and dirt and ash rained down, We became one color.
As we carried each other down the stairs of the burning building, We became one class.
As we lit candles of waiting and hope, We became one generation.
As the firefighters and police officers fought their way into the inferno, We became one gender.
As we fell to our knees in prayer for strength, We became one faith.
As we whispered or shouted words of encouragement, We spoke one language.
As we gave our blood in lines a mile long, We became one body.
As we mourned together the great loss, We became one family.
As we cried tears of grief and loss, We became one soul.
As we retell with pride of the sacrifice of heroes, We become one people.
We are:
One color
One class
One generation
One gender
One faith
One language
One body
One family
One soul
One people
We are The Power of One.
We are united.
We are America. Author Unknown

"Making Public Schools Great for Every Child"
November 5, 2001
Mr. McDaniel's Memo
I would personally like to thank all parents and guardians for their support and cooperation with our new attendance procedures. We have already seen a dramatic increase in school attendance this year, especially before Fall Vacation. I appreciate how you are making extra efforts in arranging your schedules to allow your children to remain in school. In return, we are making extra efforts to insure students' time here at school is both productive and effective.
We will be having our NCA Peer Review Team here this Thursday and Friday. A principal and teacher from a neighboring school district will review our School Profile and School Improvement Plan that we have been working on for over a year. The team will make recommendations for both improvements and accreditation by NCA. The most important thing they will discover is what a great school we have here thanks to everyone working together!
Grandparents'/Special Persons' Day and Veterans' Day

October 29, 2001
Mr. McDaniel's Memo
We are still having concerns about student drop-off and pick-up procedures not being followed by all parents and/or adults providing student transportation. When the weather turns bad or when parents are running late, there have been situations where, in order to save time or not get wet, drivers have not taken the time to follow good safety procedures. Please do not jeopardize your children or other students by driving or stopping at places not designated for student safety. Also, please be extremely carefully when entering/leaving the parking lot when buses are present. Bus drivers must focus their attention on many things, and extra cars pulling in and out make it that much more difficult for them. Thank you for your cooperation and assistance.
Change in Lunch Account Notices
Parents who choose to pay for school lunches several weeks in advance, please note the following change in procedures. You will be notified if your student's account drops below $7.50 ($2.00) for students who qualify for reduced lunches.) Lunch account notices will only be sent home on Friday's (or the last day of shorter weeks.) Please watch your child's backpack for those notices. Thanks.

If you wish to be given notice of such pesticide applications, please notify the Mr. McDaniel. Parent Support Group
Do you wonder why your children act the way they do, when you have "taught them better"? Why are children in the same family so different? Why do my spouse and I disagree on child rearing practices? How do I manage good child rearing in a single parent household? How can I help my child do better in school? These and many other questions can be answered. Solutions can be found for the many family-life issues faced by today's families.
Union United Methodist Church in Noblesville has a new support group. There are inviting parents of children of all ages to attend a group designed to enhance parenting skills. The group will be a resource for gaining knowledge through shared experiences? You are not alone!
The group will meet on the fourth Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. (except December). There will be adequate time for sharing. The facilitator for the support group is Dr. James W. Witty. Dr. Witty is a licensed marriage and family therapist with the state of Indiana, and clinical member and approved supervisor with The American Association for Marriage and Family therapy ( AAMFT).
Knowledge is your best friend when it comes to child rearing. You do not need to be a member of Union UMC, or any other church. They welcome any parent or grandparent who wishes to become the best they can be in child rearing to attend. If you have questions, please call 984-2392. The church is located at the corner of DeShane Avenue and 191st Street (just 3 miles east of SR 37 on 191st Street).

Noblesville Schools Supporting the 911 Victims' Children's Fund
Noblesville Schools has now taken in about $33,500 in shirt sales so far. It is anticipated that the profit on those sales to be between $11,000 and $12,000, and all of that amount will go to the 911 Victims' Children's Fund. Great job everyone!
We will continue to take orders, so if you have not ordered your shirt yet, please be sure to do so. Order forms are available in any school office.
November 9 (Grandparents' Day) will be the day that we will encourage all students and staff to wear their USA t-shirts to school to show support for our country. That's the last day of school before Veterans' Day.
A very special thank you goes to Mrs. Sharon Trisler, Noblesville Schools' Public Relations Coordinator, for all of her hard work and extra effort with this project. A big thank you also goes out to our own Stony Creek teachers and staff who worked after school last week sorting and packing t-shirts to distribute throughout the corporation.
Stony Creek "CHAMPS"
Noblesville Schools are continuing a student conflict-management program called "CHAMPS" (Children Achieving a More Peaceful School.) CHAMPS are a group of 4th grade students, selected by their classmates, trained to help other students at school resolve certain minor, non-physical disputes. There are ten CHAMPS per school who will work in pairs during their lunch recess times, as scheduled by the counselor. Students in conflict can be referred to a CHAMPS session by the principal, counselor, teachers, or themselves. The problem-solving process is voluntary: no one is forced to attend a session. CHAMPS are mediators, not judges or disciplinarians. They help students through a 4-step process where ideas are brainstormed and solutions agreed upon. Congratulations to this year's 4th grade CHAMPS. Mrs. Gilliom's class - Luke and Kiley; Mrs. Hudnall's class - Laura, Nathan, and Caroline; Mr. Kirkpatrick's class - Natalie and Cody; and Miss Brisco's class - Paige, Sam, and Austin. Mrs. Terri Park, Stony Creek Co
unselor, is the facilitator for this program.
Thanks PTO!
The entire Stony Creek faculty would like to thank all of those PTO parents who provided the delicious lunch for us on Tuesday, October 16, for Parent / Teacher Conference Day. We sincerely appreciate your thoughtfulness and extra efforts!

We also appreciate the help of our cafeteria and recess aides: Mary Boles, Mary Alice Purcell, and Stephanie Smith! Thanks for all you do for our students, staff, and school.

Parents' Points to Ponder:
Report Cards:
Report cards were sent home last week with all students. This sometimes can be a period of stress or worry for both students and parents. A report card is just one measure of how your child is doing in school. A child with all good grades still has many things to learn. A child with lower grades still has lots of strengths to consider.
Instead of just focusing on grades, ask your child some of the following questions:
What did you learn this grading period (in reading, math, social studies, etc.)?
What things were... Easy? Hard? Most Enjoyable?

America's Safe Schools Week - October 14-20
The National School Safety Center, state governors and state school superintendents are sponsoring America's Safe Schools Week, October 14-20, 2001. Local, state and national public officials and professional organizations also actively support this observance.
Stony Creek Elementary School and Noblesville Schools have many safety procedures in place to help insure that our schools are as safe as possible.
The following is a sample of the many programs utilized for providing our students and staff with a safe learning environment:
- School and corporation safety plans reviewed, revised, and practiced routinely.
- Corporation safety official trained and supported by the Indiana Department of Education.
- Noblesville Police liaison officers and school security personnel on duty for our schools.
- Noblesville Fire Department and State Fire Marshal conducting periodic drills and inspections.
- Identification badges for teachers and staff.
- School visitor check-in procedures and identification system.
- Required background checks for school volunteers.
Communication systems for key school personnel and all school buses.
- Caring and concerned school employees and school board members dedicated to maintaining safe schools for everyone.
President Bush Asks Students To Help Children in Afghanistan

All Noblesville elementary schools will be taking up a collection. The high school student government group will send in a check with the money from all Noblesville Schools to the White House.
It would be great to collect $486 (the number of students enrolled in our school) to help the children in Afghanistan. We will collect money until Friday, October 26.
Thank you in advance for your support.

Stony Creek Attendance? Great News!
Congratulations Stony Creek! We had a 50% perfect attendance rate during the first nine-week period. That means half of the students here at Stony Creek were here every day of school so far this year. We also want to congratulate Mrs. Dunlap's class. Fifteen out of seventeen students in her room had perfect attendance. This is AWESOME!
Keep up the good work Stony Creek students, and let's even try to beat 50% the next time! (From Mrs. Park, Stony Creek Counselor)
The Book Fair is Coming!
Stony Creek will host a Scholastic Book Fair November 6 - 9th. This is a great opportunity to support the school library and buy some great books for your children. Scholastic will provide quality literature for reasonable prices with all profit going directly to the media center in the form of books. Please mark your calendars and look for more specific information soon. Volunteers are needed! If you could spare two hours during the fair (8:30 - 3:30) please contact Kim Brinegar (776-2045) or LeAnna Groves (770-7255). Thanks for your support!
Red Ribbon Week "Every Child Is A Star...
...Free of Alcohol, Tobacco, Illegal Drugs and Violence":
The national Red Ribbon Week is scheduled for October 23 - 31. Red Ribbons are a symbol of unity against the illegal use of drugs. This public display came about in response to the tragic 1985 murder of Federal Drug Enforcement Administration Agent Enrique Camarena while he was investigating Mexican drug traffickers. At that time, angry parent groups and others began wearing red ribbons to take a public stand against the illegal use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs and to show their support of drug-free youth. The Red Ribbon Coalition theme for the 2001 / 2002 Red Ribbon Celebration is: "Every Child Is A Star... Free of Alcohol, Tobacco, Illegal Drugs and Violence"
Stony Creek Elementary School will also be taking a stand against drugs this year by participating in various Red Ribbon Week activities. Mrs. Park and our new "Just Say No" Club will be helping organize some interesting things for our students to do next week to learn more about making good decisions about tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs.
Please take this opportunity for your family to discuss some good and bad choices that your children might make when faced with the possibility of using drugs.
Parents Points to Ponder
Did You Know? Children whose parents warn them about the dangers of alcohol and other drugs are less likely to use those substances.
The three best ways to protect kids from drugs:
1. Talk to them.
2. Talk to them.
3. Talk to them.

Mr. McDaniel's Memo
Parent/Teacher Conferences:
You should be getting information for Parent / Teacher Conferences from your child's teacher soon. This time is reserved for you to discuss your child's report card, classroom progress, and individual strengths and areas in need of improvements. Due to the number of conferences that must be scheduled in a short period of time, we are asking each parent to please be on time for your conference and limit your time with the teacher to a maximum of 15 minutes. Should you need more time to discuss additional items or concerns, teachers would be glad to schedule another time to do so as soon as possible. Once one conference goes past the scheduled 15 minutes, all other conferences for the rest of the day are delayed. We know several parents also have limited time to be away from work and other responsibilities, and we ask your cooperation in helping teachers and other parents stay on schedule.
Here are a couple of tips for a successful parent/teacher conference:
BE PREPARED - Write down a few notes and questions about topics you would like to discuss. For example, you may want to talk about homework, study habits, or behavior.
TALK WITH YOUR CHILD - Before your conference, ask your child if there is anything he or she would like you to talk about with the teacher. Discuss topics covered in the conference afterwards, too.
Messages & Reminders
We would like to ask for your help and cooperation in limiting calls to the office requesting the delivery of messages and reminders to students about after school clubs or transportation plans. Lately, there have been several calls by parents asking us to contact their child's room to issue reminders to attend clubs. This becomes very disruptive to the students and teachers. Please go over each day's activities with your child before school. Emergency situations do occur, and we will be glad to let the student know of those changes, when necessary. We appreciate your assistance and understanding.
Adult Tutors Needed
The Noblesville High School guidance department is in need of adults to tutor students. The biggest demand is for math tutors. Adults should have a college degree in the subject they will be tutoring. Anyone interested may contact Janet Kimmel at 776-6257. A background check will be run on all volunteers.

Parents Points to Ponder
A parent in our school shared this story with me. It reportedly was passed on by a woman working with children as she tried to explain to them how to deal with terror and anger. She recounted this story:
A Native American grandfather was talking to his grandson about how he felt. He said, "I feel as if I have two wolves fighting in my heart. One wolf is the vengeful, angry, violent one. The other wolf is the loving, compassionate one." The grandson asked him, "Which wolf will win the battle?" The grandfather replied, "The one I feed."

Please pick up a form in the office and complete and return it as soon as possible or at least a couple of weeks prior to when you would like to be a school volunteer. F.Y.I. - Additional Attendance Information
How is student attendance information collected and reported?
State law states that it is the responsibility of the principal to maintain accurate records for student attendance and to enforce attendance. The Indiana Department of Education requires student absences to be recorded on a half or full-day basis. Specific times are set to determine when a student's attendance is counted as a full or one-half day absence.
When is a student counted present for a full or half-day?
Elementary Attendance Procedures: The tardy bells rings at 8:40. Student arriving at school between 8:40 and 11:00 a.m. will be counted as tardy. Students arriving after 11:00 will be counted as absent for 1/2 day. Students who leave school before 1:00 p.m. will be counted as absent for 1/2 day. Students leaving after 1:00 p.m. will not be counted as absent.
How is an excused or unexcused absence recorded?
School Board policy requires student absences to be determined by school principals as either excused or unexcused and recorded by classes/periods missed. Those classes/periods missed which are determined to be unexcused will be subject to a 1%(grades K-6) or 2% (grades 7-12) penalty. Documentation may be requested at any time to confirm medical/professional appointments, immediate family funerals, court attendance, bona fide religious holidays, or absences due to extraordinary circumstances. In order for absences such as those that occur immediately before or after scheduled vacations to be considered excused, documentation is required or the absence will be counted as unexcused.
Parents and guardians are reminded that student absences must be reported daily before the beginning of the school. It is important that school personnel know that your child will be absent and why. Without such a phone call, we must assume that your child will be in school for that day. Unreported absences will be recorded as unexcused. If a student is expected to be absent from school for more than one day, the parent should call the school and provide the number of days which the student is expected to miss. The parent should notify the school of any change in plans which will cause the student to miss more or fewer days than originally planned.
Please contact your school's principal if you have any questions. Thank you for your cooperation.
Note: Additional attendance information was published in the September 2001 edition of the School Zone, on pages 4 and 5. This is a publication of Noblesville Schools and mailed recently to each household in our district. Extra copies are available in the office.

Stony Creek Mustangs Helping Our Fellow Americans
Some parents have asked me about the possibility of collecting money for the disaster relief funds being established for our country's terrorists' victims, their families, and the relief efforts. A few have had their children ask about helping make donations to the Red Cross or other agencies. One of our parents, Mrs. Jeanine Pottridge, has volunteered to organize this collection effort. Cash, coins, and checks will be collected starting this Tuesday, September 18, for one week until the following Tuesday, September 25. We will be working with the Channel 6 WRTV television station, Union Federal Bank, and the American Red Cross to coordinate our efforts. All of the money we collect will go through Union Federal Bank directly to the Red Cross. Please make all checks payable to the "RTV Disaster Relief Fund." A collection jar and box will be placed in front of the Media Center during normal school hours.
Thank you for helping others in this critical time of need and for your support for our country.

Mr. McDaniel's Memo
I want to thank everyone for your cooperation yesterday in light of the unbelievable national tragedy that occurred. I am very proud of the way our teachers and staff conducted themselves, especially considering the stressful and emotional events of the day. They made the school day as normal as possible and providing productive learning opportunities for all children. We appreciate the trust and cooperation given to us by parents knowing that we share with you the concern of doing what's best for students.
Chief of Noblesville Police, Dick Russell, spoke with Dr. Ellis, Superintendent of Schools, this morning. Mr. Russell recommended that it would be appropriate to lift the lockdown that was imposed yesterday. Mr. Russell also assures us that additional police support will be visible around the schools today in order to increase our community's sense of security.
(For your information, a school lockdown is part of our school's safety plan that we practice routinely. All outside doors are locked and normal routines continue. School personnel were at main entrances to assure that only authorized individuals entered. No outside activities are allowed. Students were permitted to leave with an appropriate adult. PLEASE NOTE: Dr. Ellis has stated that students who left school early yesterday will be counted as excused on our absence report and by the classroom teacher.)
In addition to the information below, another paper is being sent home today giving you detailed ideas on how to help your child deal with this tragic event. Please contact your child's teacher, out counselor, Mrs. Park, or myself if you have any questions or concerns.
Helpful Hints For Dealing With A Traumatic Event
For Parents
* Discuss the day's events on a need to know basis as the age and developmental level of the child would warrant.
* Respond in a calm, reassuring manner, emphasizing that the child is safe and secure.
* Listen to their concerns and don't minimize their reactions.
* Limit access to viewing highly traumatic events.
* Maintain as normal a schedule as possible.
* Have children get adequate rest.
* Have children eat well-balanced, regular meals even when they don't feel like it.
* Physical activity is often helpful.
* Contact school personnel for assistance (if the child's feelings become prolonged or too intense).

Mr. McDaniel's Memo
Thanks to all drivers for your cooperation last week in dropping off and picking up students at our school. Traffic flow is much smoother and safer as a result of your help with our arrival and dismissal procedures.
Stony Creek Elementary School Improvement Committee
As mentioned in previous newsletters last year, our school is involved in a comprehensive program for continuous school improvement. We are working on meeting rigorous standards set by both the State Department of Education and the North Central Association. State law requires schools to develop an initial three (3) year strategic and continuous school improvement and achievement plan and coordinate an annual review of the plan. The initial plan and annual review must be made with input from a committee of persons interested in the school, including administrators, teachers, parents, and community and business leaders. We have decided to also include students in this group to seek ideas from them on ways to improve our school. The following individuals are members of the Stony Creek School Improvement Committee.
Co-chairs: Amy Cowser, Melissa Brisco and Bob McDaniel; Teachers: Deb Gilliom, Susan Darling, Sandra Thomas, & Julie Pittman; Staff: Becky Harting; Students: Claire Gawaluck (3rd), Wilson Smith (4th), Ellen Ayala (5th), & Mike Pruden (6th); Parents: Emily Shoultz, Sherry Ottilie, Lisa Smith, Shelly Porter, & Anne Merrell; and Community and Business: Marianne Jacobi, Jack Stoner, Dan Skaggs, & Don Roberts.
Our first meeting for this school year will be Tuesday, September 25, at 7:00 p.m. in the media center. Other committee meetings are set for Tuesday, October 23 at 3:45 p.m. and Tuesday, November 27, at 7:30 a.m. We will be publishing committee updates in your Mustang Mail on a regular basis.
On November 8 and 9, a NCA Review Team will visit our school to assess our progress with the accreditation process and review how well we are meeting NCA's extensive standards. We will also be hosting a public meeting later this fall for all interested community members to hear the progress of our school improvement efforts and to seek input on ways to make our great school even better!
School Volunteers
Parents and community members wishing to serve as school volunteers, supervise field trips, or classroom parties, must have a Volunteer Data Sheet on file in the Stony Creek office. Some volunteers will, on occasion, have access to private information about students. Volunteers who fail to respect and monitor student privacy will loose their volunteer status immediately.
Recognition Notice:
It is the practice of our school to recognize, reward, and often display exemplary student work. If, for any reason, you do not wish to have your child's work displayed for such purposes, notify his or her teacher or building principal immediately.
Student Homework Policy
Please be reminded of our school's procedure regarding student homework. No homework will be sent home for the first day of illness. If a student is ill, they probably don't feel like doing much homework anyway. They should rest and recuperate so they can return to school. On the second day in a row a student is sick, homework will be available for pick-up in the school office at 3:30 p.m., if the parents call in before 11:00 a.m. that day. Students will have the same number of days to make up missed work as he/she was absent. (Example: If a student is absent from school 3 days, he/she will have 3 days to complete the homework.)
For excused absence requests, no homework will be sent with the student. All work will be made up when the child returns to school. Please remember that these requests must be approved by the principal at least 5 school days prior to the absence.
We hope this reminder will help clarify our homework procedures. Please contact the school office or your child's classroom teacher if you need further explanation. Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated!

Mr. McDaniel's Memo
A very important period of our school year will be during the three weeks of September 10-28. At this time, our student rate of attendance is extremely critical. Our corporation's state funding is determined through student attendance. It is also about the time of third and fourth grade testing (please see the following item.) Please do your best in seeing that your child is here each and every day. It is certainly valuable to be here daily throughout the entire school year, but it is especially important during this count period. Your support would be greatly appreciated.
Fall Testing For Grades 3 & 4 - September 10 - 28
The Indiana Department of Education has directed the annual ISTEP+ tests to be administered during the Fall of the school year. These tests will be administered from September 10 to 28. The ISTEP+ tests involve students in GRADE 3 only. However, students in GRADE 4 will take the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills and an appropriate cognitive abilities test during this same time period. Appointments must be scheduled around these dates, as make-ups are nearly impossible. If you have further questions regarding ISTEP+ or any other test, please contact Mr. McDaniel or your child's classroom teacher.
School Pictures Tomorrow!
School Pictures are tomorrow, Wednesday, September 5. An envelope is being sent home TODAY for you to return money TOMORROW. Your child's picture will be taken for the yearbook even if you choose not to purchase pictures. Thank you!
Bus Conduct and Safety Rules
Students who ride our school buses were given a green sheet of paper containing Bus Conduct and Safety Rules. These forms were to be signed by both student and parent and returned by last Friday, August 31. If you have not returned yours, please do so immediately. Additional copies are available in the school office. Thank you for your cooperation.
Attention Parents: Car Riders and Student Safety
If you drop off children in the morning, or pick them up in the afternoon, please read the following carefully. (Please share this information with friends or relatives who also bring or take your children to and from school.)
We once again want to stress car rider procedures to help insure student safety. If you need to come into the school for any reason, please park in the front lot and walk your child in or out of the building with you. When cars are parked in the back, student visibility is decreased and chances that someone may be walking in your blind spot are increased. Cars who pull up to the building to unload then must back up to leave which creates a dangerous situation. Please form a single line and pull up to the end of the sidewalk to unload the children. Please do so as quickly as possible. We have had situations where students were not ready to get out of the car and are taking long periods of time unloading. This backs up traffic and causes additional safety concerns. PLEASE STAY IN A SINGLE LINE AND DO NOT PASS CARS ON THE RIGHT.
We also have had reports of cars, especially those coming in a little late (both morning and afternoons,) driving much too fast on school property. I have asked our police department to periodically monitor traffic in the back of the school. Reminder: The speed limit on Greenfield Avenue is 20 miles per hours and is being enforced! PLEASE SLOW DOWN AT SCHOOL!
Let's take the time necessary to insure student safety every day. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
School Attendance Information
Questions and answers about the Noblesville Schools' attendance policy will be printed in the next edition of the corporation's newsletter called the "School Zone." It should be mailed to your home by next week. The following questions will be answered in this publication:
What are the Indiana legal standards and requirements for student attendance?
What absences are permitted by Indiana legal standards?
Does Noblesville Schools allow other absences beyond those provided by statute?
What has been the impact of less than desirable attendance?
How are requests for waivers due to extraordinary circumstances to be reviewed?
Please watch for this newsletter and contact the school if you have any questions. Thank you!

Mr. McDaniel's Memo
We want to express our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Joan Huff, her husband Bill, and their family as they mourn the loss of their son Matthew who lost his life in an automobile accident this weekend. We will do everything possible to help them in this time of sorrow as well as help make her classroom continue on as normal. Mrs. Tammy Elmore-Dove, a regular substitute teacher and Stony Creek parent, will be here until Mrs. Huff's return. Parents of Mrs. Huff's student will meet as scheduled tonight at 6:30 p.m. in her room.
We also want to send our condolences to Mrs. McDonald, cafeteria cashier, whose father passed away last Friday and to Mrs. Darling and her family with the death of her grandmother yesterday. Mrs. Park recently lost her brother and three Stony Creek students had parents pass away this summer, too. In all of these cases, we want to let the teachers, staff, and students and their families know that we are keeping them in our thoughts and prayers.

Nurse's Notes:
SCHOOL SEASON IS HEAD LICE SEASON. A school-wide check for head lice is being conducted this week. Please remember that anyone can get head lice. We need to be aware of the problem and observe our children for frequent scratching of heads or complaints of head itching. If you suspect that your child might have head lice, please contact Mrs. Nee, our school nurse. She will be able to check your child and/or answer your questions. Let's all work to keep this problem to a minimum.
Student Insurance
Parents interested in purchasing student accident insurance should stop by the school office for a flyer describing different coverage plans. This insurance is optional, but it does provide important protection at a reasonable cost should your child have an accident at school. A 24 hours a day coverage plan is also available. The deadline for returning the envelope is the end of September with coverage not taking effect until October 15, 2001, or the date the application is received by the company or its representatives, if later. This insurance is provided by an independent carrier not associated with the school corporation. It is offered only as a service to you.
Book Rental
The first contractual payment on book rental (one-third of the total owed) is due on or before Tuesday, September 4, 2001. One-third is also due by September 24, and the final payment by October 22.
PARENTS OF KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS: Please pay your child?s kindergarten fees as soon as possible or complete a contract agreement for payments on the days listed above. Thank you!
Parents' Points to Ponder
Student Behavior - Student Choices
We have high expectations for appropriate student behavior at our school. Each child is responsible for the choices he or she makes. We want students to make the right choices every day to insure that the teaching and learning in our school is not interrupted, that everyone feels safe, and that the school climate is as positive as possible. When a child makes a poor choice, he or she must take responsibility for it and understand that appropriate consequences will occur. Please discuss with your child the importance of making good choices everyday. Thanks!
Choices
I make my own choices everyday.
No one else controls what I do or say.
Good choices - bad choices - it's up to me.
I choose to decide what my life will be.
When my choices are wrong, when things go bad,
I can yell, get angry, hit, or be sad.
I can blame my neighbors or my brother,
Or point at myself, not someone other.
I can make excuses; say you're not fair.
I can not tell the truth; say I don't care.
Or I can do the right thing; just be nice.
Learn so I won't make the same mistake twice.
I make my own choices every day.
I know I control what I do and say.
I will make good choices and you will see,
For now I'll take responsibility.

Attention Stony Creek Visitors:
Please assist us in maintaining a safe educational environment for our students and teachers by stopping by the office FIRST when visiting our school. Visitors are always welcome, but we require that you inform our office staff of your purpose of visiting immediately upon your arrival and pick up a "VISITOR" badge before proceeding to other areas of the building. Please park in the main parking lot, not along the front sidewalk curb area, and enter the front, main entrance. Volunteer Data Sheet
A reminder to parents that as part of School Board Policy #3121, an individual desiring to help as a volunteer in Noblesville Schools must complete a "Volunteer Data Sheet." This information will be kept on record to help us best use your talents to help our students. This form will also be used as a permission slip for a Criminal History Records check, required if you plan to volunteer in our schools for tutoring, field trips and/or other school activities when you would have sole care, custody or control over students. Please pick up a form in the office and complete and return it as soon as possible or at least several weeks prior to when you would like to be a school volunteer. Those parents who completed a form last year do not have to do it again. Thank you.
Walkers and Car Riders
Car riders are dismissed first so that students who walk will not be among the cars leaving the back driveway. We want to do everything possible to prevent accidents at this school. REMINDER: STUDENTS MUST BE LOADED AND UNLOADED FROM CARS AT THE REAR OF THE SCHOOL. THIS HELPS AVOID ANY CHANCE OF ACCIDENTS WITH SCHOOL BUSES IN THE FRONT OF THE SCHOOL. Please do not pass cars in front of you which are loading or unloading students. THANK YOU!
School Attendance Policy
School attendance is essential for school success. If students are not here, they can never truly make-up what they missed. The question, "Did I miss anything important?" will always be answered with, "Yes!" There are significant changes to the attendance policy this year. More information will be published in upcoming newsletters.
