Billy Keller Basketball Camp is offering two Basketball Christmas Clinics to any boy or girl presently in grades 1-8. More information is in the office.

It's Cold Outside -
Don't forget to send children dressed for outside recess each day. We will make every attempt to have all of the students experience the fresh outdoors during the winter months. Heavy winter coats, hats, gloves and boots are appropriate for winter wear. We also encourage students to wear insulated snow pants. Once we have snow on the ground, snow pants will be required if students wish to play in the snow covered areas. Wet pants make for a miserable day in the classroom so please consider this option. Temperatures outside do sometimes force us to remain indoors. Wind chill factors will determine our recess situation. We normally use 0 F as the school guideline. Medical research has shown that daily periods of fresh air and exercise contribute to a a more healthy child both physically and mentally.

BIRTHDAY BOOK CLUB
We had several children who celebrated their November birthdays by participating in our Birthday Book Club. They bought a book from our display and donated it to our library. Happy Birthday to: Sarah, Kayla, John , and Rachel. Stop by to see their pictures on the bulletin board just outside of the LMC.

LIFESKILLS at Forest Hill
This month we are focusing on PROBLEM SOLVING. Please look for opportunities to help students solve everyday problems and make decisions in creative ways. Here are some ideas you might try:
- Think out loud as you go through the process of solving everyday problems and making everyday decisions at home. This will provide your child with many new ideas about how to solve problems. Also explain problems that you need to solve at your job.
- Share stories about your own childhood, especially when you had to resolve a problem; explain the results of your decision and your feelings.
- Allow, within limits, your child to make some mistakes. This will make him/her stronger from the learning experience and more prepared to face future decisions and problems.
Thanks for all you do to reinforce the Forest Hill Lifeskills at home!

EMERGENCY CALLING LIST
Watch your child's backpack, a paper will be coming home soon asking you if you want to participate.

Weather News:
Snow will be falling in Indiana before we know it. We want to make sure your children are dressed appropriately for the winter season. Heavy winter coats, hats that cover the ears, mittens or gloves and leather type shoes are good choices. Rubber, leather, or insulated boots are also good. Not only are these items necessary for the winter conditions going to and from school, but are needed for outside recess.

As in the past, we are going to encourage outside recess for all of our students, even though some daily conditions may allow us to only be outside for just a portion of the regular recess time. Of course, should temperatures and/or wind chill become extreme, we will not go out at all during those days. Generally, we will use 0 degrees F as a guideline. Requests from parents for their child to stay inside during cold weather, particularly after an illness will be honored with limitations. However, if these requests become habitual, we will ask that a doctor's statement be obtained in order for a child to stay inside for long periods of time. Medical research has shown that daily periods of fresh air and exercise contributes to a more healthy child, both physically and mentally. The children will have to stay in the nurse's office during recess. Teachers have recess duty or "prep"time during recess.
School Delays and closing will be announced on the following television and radio stations: WTTV/Channel 4, WRTV/Channel 6, WISH/Channel 8, WTHR/Channel 13, WXIN/Channel 59, WGRL (93.9), WNDE/WFBQ (1260/94.7), WFMS (95.5), WENS (97.1), WZPL (99.5), WMYS (1430), WGLD (104.5), and WTPI (107.9). The decision to close school is made by the Superintendent. If shcool is closed or delayed, this decision is usually made by 6:30 AM. We also encourage all parents to make plans for their children if school is dismissed early, so that children will know what to do and/or where to go. Please note that some stations post delays or closings later than others. Therefore, we suggest that you check a couple of the above listed stations.
A reminder that when we have a 2 hour delay for school there is no breakfast served on those mornings. Also, clubs do not meet on these days. Unless, the teacher who is sponsoring the club tells you differently.

This information will be kept on record to help us best use your talents to help our students. This form will also be used as a persmission slip for a Criminal History Records check, required if you plan to volunteer in our schools for field trips and/or other school activities. We have been experiencing long delays in the background check process from the Indiana State Police. Even if you turn in your application in several weeks before an activity, we cannot guarantee that it will be processed in time by the State Police to have you approved. We apologize for this situation and hope you understand how part of this process may be delayed.

Safety Drills
Forest Hill has been practicing safety drills for fire and tornado emergencies for many years as required by law. This year we have taken the safety of our children to another level by having the Forest Hill staff practice safety drills for additional emergencies such as bomb threats, security issues, violent intruders, gun threats, and hostage situations. We have felt these areas needed to be addressed with many recent intrusions into schools across the country. Up till now we have not involved our students. We are at the point in time where we believe our students and staff should work together on our procedures. We will be walking our children through these additional safety drills in the next few months and wanted you to know in advance of our plans. The Forest Hill staff will make every effort to treat these drills as serious safety issues in order to provide a safe and secure environment for our children to learn. Please keep in mind this is not an alarmist reaction due to problems at Forest Hill.

We all need to be prepared.

Our next lifeskill is one that is constantly in demand both inside and outside of school life. We will focus on being accountable for words, actions, and deeds. We will examine which skills demonstrate a greater sense of RESPONSIBILITY. Every day, in many ways, we expect children to be responsible for chores, schoolwork, manners, and attitudes. Responsibility is a true lifeskill, one that strengthens family relationships, reinforces employment capabilities, and empowers friendships. Myth - Even our best students in Indiana don't measure up to students in other states who take SAT.
Fact - The Indiana public school students who will graduate this year with an Academic Honors degree, 23% of their graduating class scored an average of 1126 on the SAT. Among Midwestern contiguous states, Indiana ranks first among states with 15% to 30% of students taking the SAT: and second among states with 10% to 35% of students taking the SAT. We just thought you should know.

Dear parents,
As we continue to work with our rules and procedures for the beginning of school, we attempt to inform our parents of procedures that affect them. One of our security and safety procedures deals with entering our building after hours. Our office closes at 4 p.m. and the building doors are locked at 4:00 p.m. Students and parents will not be able to enter classrooms after 4:00 p.m. Thank you for your help in this matter.

Big Sisters is a program designed for girls ages 8-14 who would benefit from one to one attention from an adult volunteer. If you believe that your daughter would benefit prom participating in the Big Sisters program, please call Laurie Moore, Hamilton County Coordinator, at 776-3450.

Parents' Points to Ponder:
Forest Hill has adopted the following five Lifelong Guidelines which will be fully explained, taught, and practiced with the children in this school during the school year. They are very basic values which we all need to get along together in our world.

1. Truth
2. Trust
3. Active Listening
4. No Put downs
5. Personal Best

In addition, we will learn and practice 16 Life Skills. It is important that children understand and practice these skills in order to be successful and responsible citizens of our community and our world. We will feature one at a time for students, staff, and parents to focus on and discuss.

Speech and Language News
My name is Taryn Johns. I am the speech-language pathologist for Forest Hill Elementary. I am replacing Mrs. McClain this year. I am looking forward to meeting all of the students at Forest Hill and working with the children enrolled in speech-language services. I wanted to let you know that speech will be starting on Wednesday September 6th. If your child attends speech, please check your child?s backpack next week, as I will be sending home some information regarding speech-language services and speech classroom procedures. I am looking forward to an exciting year, and I can?t wait to get started! If you have any questions regarding your child or the services provided, please feel free to contact me at Forest Hill. Thanks

PARENTS' POINTS TO PONDER
(The following information was provided by a consultant from the Indiana Department of Education.

"This year's Phi Delta Kappa/Gallup Poll of the Public's Attitudes Toward the Public Schools documents significant trends in public attitudes about the quality of schools and overall education. The poll shows a shift in public attitudes about high-stakes testing, support for choice involving private or church-related schools, school financing, and what should be emphasized in a school?s curriculum. Overall, the findings are pretty encouraging. The poll demonstrates that the U.S. public is not dissatisfied with public schooling.

Respondents continue to indicate a high level of satisfaction with their local schools, a level of satisfaction that this year approaches its all-time high among the parents whose children attend those schools. Seven in 10 public school parents now assign the school their oldest child attends an A or a B.

More than half of individualized surveyed agreed: "reforming the existing system of public schools, rather than seeking an alternative system, is the best way to bring about school improvement. When given the choice, 75 percent would improve and strengthen existing public schools while just 22 percent would opt for vouchers, the alternative most frequently mentioned by public school critics."

BREAKFAST AT THE COOL KIDS CAFE $.75 OR REDUCED $.30. BREAKFAST IS SERVED AT 8:30
