THE PRINCIPAL'S POINTS - Student test results for grades three and four were sent home to parents on January 12. Those results, along with information given by local and state media, can many times be confusing and overwhelming to parents and teachers alike. I would like to take the opportunity to share with you, in a presentation and discussion format, an explanation and summary of White River Elementary School's test results. This presentation will also summarize last year's White River results, those of our school district, as well as state-wide results. Our White River parents are invited to attend this presentation on Tuesday, February 20 at 7 p.m. in our school's cafeteria. We encourage your attendance and value your participation as we strive for continuous improvement.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART - All students watched a video showing how they could help by raising money for the American Heart Association's research and educational fund. Many people, probably you know someone personally, have had their lives extended due to the research that has been done in heart disease.
Today all White River students (Grades 1-4) should bring home a Jump Rope For Heart envelope. The following should be happening now: 1. Sign the Permission Slip , tear it off the envelope, and return it to your classroom teacher. This will be used for prize drawings on Feb. 23. 2. Determine whom you can ask for a donation. (Talk to parents about this) If these people are out of town, phone, write, or e-mail them explaining that you would like their help in collecting donations for the American Heart Association. They can mail donations to you, and you can collect them in your envelope. Any checks need to be payable to the American Heart Association. Do not go door to door. 3. Fill out your envelope--if you have collected $50 or more, be sure to include shirt size. Remember donations are due on Feb. 20, 21, 22, or 23. Bring them to your classroom teacher on those days. The final collecton day will be Friday, March 2. Any donations turned in after that will not be eligible for prizes.
Any questiions may be directed to Mrs. Scott at 770-2080.

At the end of the last 9 week grading period each student in grade levels 1-4 who has not missed a day, was given a free bowling pass for a game at Stardust Bowl. All students with perfect attendance also got to wear a sticker for the day.

Their weekly, one hour visits will allow these high school students to individually interact by reading to a classroom of students for a fifteen minute period. Approximately twenty-four classes will be visited each Tuesday for six consecutive weeks.

THE PRINCIPAL'S POINTS - All students in grades one through four are bringing home today Indiana's Academic Standards in English/Language Arts and Mathematics that were adopted by the Indiana State Board of Education this past summer.
These standards have been rated among the best in the nation by the Fordham Foundation and Achieve, Inc. These grade-by-grade standards are being distributed to our parents as the law requires. They outline what your child should know and be able to do in each subject, at each grade level. We are beginning to work toward meeting these new standards, many of which have been achieved with past and best practices in our classrooms. However, learning doesn't take place only in the classroom. Our students spend far more time at home than they do in school. How they spend their time at home can make a difference. That's why your help and involvement are so important. Listed within these standards are several things you can do to help your child succeed. Please become involved with his or her education. Use this guide, along with supporting our efforts to provide the best opportunities for your child and our students to succeed today and in the future.
Mr. Harvey
PARENTS: WE NEED YOUR HELP! - Have you had a change of telephone number, change of address, or change of employment since the beginning of this school year? Did you notify the school office of that change? We have had several situations already this year when a child became ill, injured, or missed a bus, and the telephone numbers on your child's enrollment form were either disconnected or changed. For us to contact you in emergency situations, you must provide the school with any changes that would affect our ability to contact you. Please send a note with any changes so we can update our records. Thanks for your assistance!
HOLIDAY SING! NEXT TUESDAY AND THURSDAY - The 2nd Grade Holiday Sing will be on Tuesday, December 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the gymnasium. Dress Rehearsal will be at 2:00 p.m. The 1st Grade Holiday Sing will be on Thursday, December 14th at 7:00 p.m. in the gymnasium. Dress Rehearsal will be at 2:00 p.m.
FOOD DRIVE A HUGE SUCCESS! - White River's Student Council and the Noblesville Fire Department would like to say THANK YOU to all of our students who brought in food for the food drive. Your response was overwhelming! Over 1,000 items of food were contributed. Thank you for being such a caring group of people for all families of our Noblesville and White River community.
MEDIA CENTER NEWS - In order to be sure our students will have plenty of books to read over the long Christmas Break, the Media Center will be hosting a "Book Swap" on Monday and Tuesday, December 18th and 19th. Each of our students is encouraged to bring in one to five (1-5) gently used books to the Media Center staff sometime during the week of December 11th-15th. We will be keeping a record of how many books each student brings in to us. Then, on either the 18th or 19th, each classroom teacher will receive an envelope containing tickets for each student who is participating in the Book Swap. Students will receive one ticket for each book they have brought in to the Media Center. They will then be able to trade each ticket in for another book to read over Christmas vacation.
The Media Center will also be hosting an All-School-Christmas-Read-Aloud on Thursday, December 21st. Guest readers will include: Mr. Harvey, our Principal; Mrs. Marge Cox, Media Services Coordinator; and Mrs. Jane Linville, Elementary Technology Specialist.
BOOK FAIR NEWS - Our Fall Scholastic Book Fair, held on November 6th-10th, was a great success earning approximately $3,000.00 in books and instructional materials for our Media Center. Anne Clemence and Kathy Baker, Book Fair Chairs, and Kristi Boyd, Media Specialist, would like to thank White River's teachers, parents, students, and community for supporting the Book Fair. They would also like to thank the many volunteers who staffed the Book Fair, including: Denise Wethington, Judy Way, Jackie Bates, Michelle Prater, Betsy Horton, Lori Pappas, Sarah Carter, Becky Kahlo, Robin Moser, Barb Tallman, Mary Ogle, Brenda Christenson, Carol Schmidt, Patty Garlick, Carol Haney, Mary Doty, Jennifer Potee, Gennie Ball, Julie Karns, Barb Behrends, Dani McKiernan, Karla Wallace, Tiffany Thomas, Barb Erney, Bill Crumbo, Nanci Browne, Melissa Hiller, Peggy Wood, Renee Reks, Carol Johnson, and Danielle Fleming. Plans are already under way for our Spring Book Fair which will be held in April.
ART ROOM REQUEST - If you have a wall calendar that you are planning on throwing out, please consider donating it to the art room. Many calendars have great photographs that the students can look at as they draw. Animals and flowers are favorite subjects, but I can use many other themes. I am also looking for scraps of material, buttons or yarn, so if you have any of these items that you would like to get rid of, please send them my way. Thank you. Ms. Smeltzer
GYMNASTICS TEAM HOSTS CLINIC -The Noblesville High School gymnastics team is sponsoring a gymnastics clinic for children in grades 1-8 to raise funds for the team.
