Notes from the Principal's Desk . . .

I want to thank everyone who attended our Thursday Night Spectacular last evening. It was an enjoyable evening with a variety of activities available for parents and students. Hopefully, you have learned something new by viewing the many science fair exhibits or picked out some new reading material at the Book Fair. And, of course, the ice cream sundaes were delicious! Special thanks to all our volunteers. Your efforts and your support help benefit the PTO and all students at Hazel Dell Elementary School!

Please be reminded of the adjustment to our school calenda due to the inclement weather we experienced in December. Students will now attend school on Monday, March 19. All students are expected to be in attendance on this make-up day.

Mr. Land

Congratulations to the following students who were named as ?rade level champions?in Science Fair 2001 . . . Noah and Erik - 1st Grade, Neill - 2nd Grade, Bekah and Jennifer - 3rd Grade, and Cara - 4th Grade. We hope everyone enjoyed viewing the projects and encourage more students to get involved next year. Many hours of hard work and research went into each project and every student should be commended for a job well done!

2000-2001 Yearbook Information
Once again, a school yearbook will be offered to our students this year. The cost is $12.00 per yearbook and order forms are being sent home today. School yearbooks help provide memories that you can enjoy for many years to come. This year's yearbook will feature class, faculty, and staff pictures as well as numerous special activities and group pictures . . . all in color!!! Don't wait . . . order your yearbook before the March 16th deadline!

Staff Development Day #5 - Early Dismissal
Please be reminded that Tuesday, February 27 will be an early dismissal day. As mentioned earlier, the Indiana
Department of Education has given Noblesville Schools permission to dismiss students early for staff and program development activities. School will be dismissed after lunch at 12:50 PM. Only AM Early Childhood and Kindergarten students will attend school on this day. PM students will not attend school.

Reading Overnight/Reading Night
Are you ready? Hazel Dell's Reading Overnight is scheduled for March 9 for students in Grades 3-4. Reading Night is planned for March 16 for students in Grades K-2. Invitations will be sent to all students who have reached their reading goals. Many exciting activities are being planned by the committee members. It should be two evenings of fun; one evening may even be sleepless!

Testing for 1st and 2nd Grades
It's that time again! We will be testing 1st and 2nd Grade students beginning March 5 and continuing through March 16. Students will be taking an achievement test as well as a cognitive abilities test. We feel it is more appropriate to test 1st and 2nd Grade students in the spring versus the fall. This allows for a less stressful beginning of school year. As always, student attendance is very important and students should make every effort to attend school during this test period. Parents, please lend your support by encouraging your son or daughter to do their best. Adequate rest and a good breakfast will also help students perform to the best of their ability. If you have questions, please contact your child's teacher or Mr. Land.

Kindergarten Enrollment for 2001-2002
Kindergarten enrollment for students who will be eligible to enter kindergarten next school year will be held April 16-20 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Students should enroll at the elementary school they will attend. According to Indiana law, children must be five years of age on or before June 1, 2001 in order to enroll in kindergarten. Immunization records and original birth certificate are required! Please help our enrollment by sharing this information with neighbors and friends.

Excellence in Education Teacher Award
Last year, Project E launched the first annual Excellence in Education Teacher Awards program in an effort to praise and publicly reward quality teaching in Indiana. To qualify for the award, an educator must spend the majority of his/her day instructing students in Kindergarten through 12th grade in an accredited or non-public Indiana School. Anyone can nominate a teacher, but an administrator within the school or district must support the nomination. Nomination forms are available in our school office. Once nominations are received, the teacher will be given details about the application process. Please contact Mr. Land or call the foundation at 317-884-0156 if you have any questions or need to obtain more information regarding the Excellence in Education Teacher Award. The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 16.

Note: Susan Julian was one of ten recipients to receive this award last year.

Noblesville Schools Board Goals for 2001

The Noblesville Board of School Trustees recently adopted the following goal for the year 2001. These goals represent the entire learning community and reflect the vision of all Noblesville Schools.

Formalize, support, and continue to frame expectations to school committees to maximize
school improvement plans' value and impact.

- Support school improvement committees to improve and update programming opportunities.

- Encourage the participation of leaders including administrators, teachers, parents, and community and business persons, in school improvement committees.

Inform and educate stakeholders concerning the school improvement initiative.

- Educate the community concerning the planning process and importance of the school improvement initiative.

- Use repetition - include information in every newsletter and district communication.

Continue to align academic programming to the standards and expectations necessary for our
students.

Research and identify options for continuous improvement models for Noblesville Schools.

Continue to stress a culture of customer service orientation through open and continuing communications.

Continue to evaluate and formulate plans to update current facilities and plan for future needs.

Pursue opportunities to adopt and implement procedures to minimize, and long-term to
eliminate, the unfunded retirement liability for the district's future.

Continue to recognize outstanding performance of the students, employees, and patrons of Noblesville Schools.

Complete and implement the athletic evaluation format identified in the 2000 Board Goals.

Encourage and support broader communication, collaboration, and cooperation between the school corporation and city officials.

Notes from the Principal's Desk . . .

Congratulations to Hazel Dell Elementary School! Earlier this month, we received notification from the Indiana Department of Education that our school has qualified for a monetary award of $3,063.64 through the Indiana School Incentive Award Program. To qualify for the school improvement award, it was necessary for our school to improve in at least two of the following areas: ISTEP+ total battery, language arts proficiency score, mathematics proficiency score, and student attendance. Our students demonstrated improvement in all four areas being evaluated!!! Other schools receiving award money for school improvement this year are Noblesville High School, Hinkle Creek Elementary School, and Stony Creek Elementary School.

Also, for the very first time, Hazel Dell Elementary School has been designated as a Four Star School for 2000-2001. Being selected as a Four Star School indicates our school has performed in the top 25 percent of all schools in the state in each of the four areas (listed earlier) in the Indiana School Incentive Award Program. Along with Hazel Dell, Noblesville Middle School, Hinkle Creek Elementary School, and Stony Creek Elementary School are being recognized as "four star" schools this year.

Teachers, students, and parents should be proud of our joint efforts in receiving these awards!!! Keep up the good work!

Mr. Land

***********************************************************************************************

"Everybody Counts" to Begin
Next week, all of our students will participate in "Everybody Counts" . . . a program designed to teach children about various handicaps and how people with these disabilities learn to cope with them. Hopefully, our students will have a much better understanding and awareness of handicapped individuals once this worthwhile program and follow-up activities are completed. Again, special thanks to the parent volunteers who will be helping with this unique learning opportunity. Without your help, the "Everybody Counts" program would not be possible.

Reminder of PTO Meeting . . . Date Changed!!!
Just a reminder . . . our next monthly PTO meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 7. The meeting will be held in the IMC and will begin at 7:00 PM. Please note this is a week earlier than normal. We hope many of you have plans with your significant other on February 14th! Child care is provided and we encourage your attendance and participation.

Parent-Teacher Conferences for Grades 1-4 and Kindergarten/Early Childhood Schedules
As a reminder to our parents, our second Parent-Teacher Conference Day is scheduled for February 15 from
12:30-7:00 PM. Conference notices will be sent home the first week in February. Students in Grades 1-4 will be dismissed at 11:40 AM on both Thursday, February 15 and Friday, February 16. Please mark these important dates and times on your calendar!

Kindergarten students will attend school at their regular times on Thursday, February 15. However, there will be NO bus transportation provided for afternoon kindergarten students. On Friday, February 16, only AM Kindergarten students will attend school. PM Kindergarten students will not attend school on February 16. Please note this is different from the kindergarten calendar you received at the beginning of the school year. Early Childhood students will follow the same schedule as kindergarten.

Revised School Calendar
Parents and students should be reminded about the revised school calendar for 2000-2001. As you know, students did not attend school on (Tuesday) December 19 due to inclement weather conditions. Since we are required to make up all missed school days, students will now attend school on (Monday) March 19. This date was originally listed on the official school calendar as a flex day just for this purpose. If we should miss additional days of school due to weather, those days will also need to be made up. We'll keep you updated with these calendar changes as students are expected to be in attendance on make-up days.

School Bus Drivers are Appreciated at Hazel Dell!
The week of February 5-9 has been designated as School Bus Driver Appreciation Week for Noblesville Schools.
We would like to recognize them for their outstanding service to our school and to our students. A special "thank you" to

Notes from the Principal's Desk . . .

Welcome to 2001!!! I hope everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing holiday vacation. Hopefully, we will survive winter and not have to wait too long before spring arrives.

Report cards are being sent home with all students in Grades K-4 today! Please review this progress report and return to school with your signature. If you have questions or concerns, please contact your child's teacher or myself. Please keep in mind that another Parent/Teacher Conference Day is scheduled for February 15. You will receive more information in the near future concerning this upcoming conference. ISTEP and CTBS test results are being sent home today for students in Grades 3 and 4. Again, please review results and contact your child's teacher or myself with further questions. Overall, parents and students should be pleased with the results.

As the second semester gets underway, let us continue working together as we strive to provide the best educational opportunities for all students at Hazel Dell Elementary School!

Mr. Land

Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday - No School!
On Monday, January 15, students will not be attending school in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. School will resume at the regular time on Tuesday. Enjoy the extra long weekend!

Staff Development Day #4 - Early Dismissal
Please be reminded that Wednesday, January 24 will be an early dismissal day. As mentioned earlier, the Indiana Department of Education has given Noblesville Schools permission to dismiss students early for staff and program development activities. School will be dismissed after lunch at 12:50 PM. Afternoon classes for Early Childhood and Kindergarten will not meet.

Please Note: Due to the many delayed starting times already this year and the possibility of still more, we will not switch our AM and PM Early Childhood/Kindergarten students for the remaining early release days as we had originally intended to do. Hopefully, this will help balance the number of days Early Childhood/Kindergarten students are in attendance.

Reminder of School Closing Procedure for Inclement Weather
With winter upon us, school may be closed, dismissed early or have a delayed starting time due to inclement weather conditions. The decision to close school is made by the Superintendent. If school is closed or delayed, this decision is usually made by 6:30 AM. Most major television and radio stations will be notified. Please note that AM Early Childhood and AM Kindergarten classes do not meet on days with a delayed starting time. We also encourage all parents to make plans for their children if school is dismissed early, so children will know what to do and/or where to go.

Revised School Calendar
Parents and students should be reminded about the revised school calendar for 2000-2001. As you know, students did not attend school on (Tuesday) December 19 due to inclement weather conditions. Since we are required to make up all missed school days, students will now attend school on (Monday) March 19. If we should miss additional days of school due to weather, those days will also need to be made up. We'll keep you updated with these calendar changes as students are expected to be in attendance on make-up days.

We collected $262 from students and staff members at Hazel Dell by selling "stars" before the
holiday vacation. This money was corporately matched by a generous donor and $524 was
given to Head Start. They were very appreciative of this donation. A big "thank you" to everyone who helped in this effort to help those who can benefit from our generosity . . .
"there is a reason for giving this season!"

Spelling Bee Information
This year's school Spelling Bee has been set for Friday, January 26 at 2:00 PM. Any 4th grade student is eligible to compete with a school champion and runner-up being selected. "Everybody Counts" . . . January 29-February 2
All of our students will participate in "Everybody Counts" . . . a program designed to teach children about various handicaps and how people with these disabilities learn to cope with them. Hopefully, our students will have a much better understanding and awareness of handicapped individuals once this worthwhile program and special follow-up activities are completed. End of Grading Period/1st Semester
Next Friday marks the end of our second nine week grading period and our first semester. It's hard to believe that the 2000-2001 school year is half over. Please be aware that Monday, January 8th is a teacher work day and students will not attend school on this day. Report cards for all students (K-4) will be sent home once we return to school from Christmas Vacation on Friday, January 12.

New Indiana Academic Standards Adopted
All parents of students in Grades K-4 should have received a copy of the new state standards for English/Language Arts and Mathematics last week. These new standards outline what your child should know and be able to do in each subject, at each grade level. Indiana's new standards were adopted by the State Board of Education this past summer. Your child will begin work toward meeting these new standards immediately. Remember: Learning doesn't only take place in the classroom. You are the most important influence on your child. Indiana's Academic Standards give you an important tool to ensure your child gets the best education possible. Teachers and parents working together can make this happen!

Science Fair Reminder
Science Fair 2001 is scheduled for February 22. Information sheets continue to be available in the school office and students need to return the "Participation Contract" before the February 2nd deadline. Science Fair display boards are now available to purchase ($3.00) in the school office. Parents may pick them up at their convenience. Please remember that all students in Grades K-4 are eligible to participate.
