Excellence In Education Teacher Award
On Monday, April 3 the Chistel DeHaan Family Foundation announced that it will award a total of $100,00 a year to ten outstanding educators in Indiana. With the support and assistance of Arthur Andersen, the Excellence in Education Teacher Award will be presented during the John R. Wooden Tradition this November. Mr. Wooden, a native of Martinsville, states, "I am first a teacher. Anything that can be done to elevate the success of teachers in Indiana is dear to my heart. I am delighted that we are using the Wooden Tradition to showcase teaching excellence." This is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge effective educators throughout our state.
To qualify for the award, an educator must spend the majority of his/her day instructing students in Kindergarten through 12th grade in an accredited or non-public Indiana school. Anyone can nominate a teacher, but an administrator within the school or district must support the nomination. Nomination forms are available in our school? office. The deadline for nomination is June 9, 2000. Once nominations are received, the teacher will be given details about the application process.
Please contact Mrs. Ress if you have any questions or need to obtain more information regarding the Excellence in Education Teacher Award.
Notable News!!!
Just a brief summary of music at North this year.
Fourth grade spent most of the first semester playing hand chimes in class.
We've explored notation and rhythm through active participation.
They worked on playing as an ensemble through cooperation.
Second semester has been focused on review all the symbols and music "lingo" they will need for their fifth grade keyboarding class with Miss Oaks.
Third Grade is very animated and spent a great deal of time singing with expression and feeling. They explored thoughts and feelings that music can evoke. They learned some South African songs and dances to which we then added instruments and drumming techniques.
Second grade and first grade lessons went hand in hand.
We've spent a great deal of time with pitch relationships, vocal and instrumental. The children are also very well versed on the rhythmic value of half, quarter, and eighth notes. They can take music dictation through the use of Kodaly notation and solfege syllables.
All grades spent everyday listening to classical music. Sometimes, through discussion, writings, or pictures they expressed how they connected to the music.
Each month one composer was discussed in length with the children. We sang their music , listened to their pieces, and explored their personal lives through books. Recently we had an instrument petting zoo, thanks to Mr. May and Paige's Music. All the students were given an opportunity to play instruments from the music families. This hands on experience, I think, will encourage the children to make music a part of their lives for years to come. Don't forget to keep singing and exploring the vast world of music.
Thanks for a wonderful year,
Mrs. Krent

Helping Your Child With Homework
Finding a time and place
Children need to know that their parents and adults close to them think homework is important. Finding a regular time and place for homework helps children complete assignments and turn them in on time.
- Set a regular time.
The best schedule is one that works for your child and your family. What works well in one household may not work in another. For instance, one youngster may work best in the afternoon after an hour of play, and another may be more efficient after dinner although late at night, when children are tired, is seldom a good time.
Some families have a required amount of time that children must devote to homework or some other learning activity each school night. The length of time may vary depending upon the child's age. With a set amount of time, your child may be less likely to rush through assignments or "forget" to bring home assignments that need to be done.
- Pick a place.
A study area should have lots of light, supplies close by, and be fairly quiet.
A study area doesn't have to be fancy. A desk in the bedroom is nice, but for many youngsters the kitchen table or a corner of the living room works just fine.
Your child may enjoy decorating a special study corner. A plant, a brightly colored container to hold pencils, and some favorite artwork taped to the walls can make study time more pleasant.
Keep pencils, pens, erasers, writing paper, and a dictionary nearby, if possible. Other things that might be helpful include glue, a stapler, paper clips, maps, a calculator, a pencil sharpener, tape, scissors, a ruler, index cards, a thesaurus, and an almanac.
- Remove distractions.
Turn off the television and discourage social telephone calls during homework time. A call to a classmate about an assignment may, however, be helpful.
Some youngsters work well with quiet background music, but loud noise from the stereo or radio is not okay. Try having all family members take part in a quiet activity during homework time.

Second Grade Testing
We will be testing second grade students beginning March 6 through March 15. Students will be taking an achievement test as well as a cognitive abilities test. We feel it is more appropriate to test second grade students in the spring versus the fall. This allows for a less stressful beginning of school year and will also, hopefully, help prepare our students for ISTEP+ next fall as third graders. As always, student attendance is very important and students should make every effort to attend school during this test period. Parents, please lend your support by encouraging your children to do their best. Adequate rest and a good breakfast will help students perform to the best of their abilities. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher or Mrs. Ress.
Spring Sing
Come one and all to the North Spring Sing, March 22nd at 7:00 p.m. "I Need a Vacation" will be performed by the third and fourth grade classes. More details to come. - Mrs. Krent
Children's Concert
The Noblesville High School Orchestra will present its third annual Children's Concert at 2:00 p.m. March 12 in the high school auditorium. This year's movie music includes: The King & I, The Sound of Music, Mancina Magic, Chattanooga Choo, Hoedown from Rodeo, Take Five, Somewhere Out There, and The Little Mermaid. An instrument petting zoo will follow the concert. Children will have an opportunity to see instruments up close and try them out if they would like. Tickets are available from NHS Orchestra members starting February 28 or at the door the day of the concert. Individual tickets are $5 and Family Tickets are $15.
Kindergarten Enrollment for 2000-2001
Kindergarten enrollment for students who will be eligible to enter kindergarten next school year will be held April 17-21 from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Students should enroll at the elementary they will attend. At the present time, according to Indiana law, children must be five years of age on or before June 1, 2000, in order to enroll in kindergarten. Immunization records and original birth certificate are required. Please help our enrollment by sharing this information with neighbors and friends.
A Note From Speech and Hearing
This year, all students in kindergarten, first grade, and fourth grade, students new to Noblesville Schools, and students in all special education programs will be screened for hearing efficiency. This screening procedure in no way replaces the complete medical evaluation given by your physician, but is a fair assessment of auditory (hearing) acuity. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me.
Thank You. - Katy Myer, Speech-Language Pathologist
Note from the Nurse
Indiana has a free health insurance program for children and pregnant women. You may be eligible. Information is available in the school office or you can contact Mrs. Warren, school nurse at 773-0482.
Super Saturday Success
Thank you to all the wonderful parents and volunteers who were able to give us their help in making Super Saturday another wonderful day for the children at North Elementary. It is always a highlight of the winter season for the children and the parents who are here. Next year, we hope even more of you will join in this great day. Thank you PTO parents.
Life Touch Pictures
The Life Touch photographer will be here on March 24 to take great photographs of the children with special seasonal backdrops. Many parents enjoy using these very nice photographs for Mothers Day gifts for grandmothers. Everyone is photographed and the finished portraits are sent home for you to see. Ifyou want to keep the pictures, you pay for them. If you do not want to keep the pictures, you simply return them. If you do not want your child photographed at all, so that you do not have to make a decision to buy them or not to buy them, just send a note to the teacher saying not to take the picture.
