Brithday Snacks - A reminder to parents:
When your child has a birthday, you may send in snacks for the classroom. Indiana state law requires that these treats be store bought. Please do not send in homemade items. We do not have birthday parties during school hours. We will be glad to let your child pass out store bought birthday treats before leaving at the end of the school day.
News from the Media Center
Mark your calendars! The Science Discovery Book Fair was so well received last year, that we are repeating it on Wednesday, November 29 through Friday, December 1. In addition to books, there will be games, puzzles, kits, and other educational items for sale in the Media Center. This is a great opportunity to do Christmas shopping along with helping the PTO earn profits for North's Reading Is Fundamental program. Parents are welcome to visit the Book Fair from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Wednesday through Friday, November 29 to December 1.
Also, since we need volunteers to help with the sale, you are receiving a flyer for those who can volunteer at the Book Fair.
Recess and Cafeteria or Kitchen Help Needed !
North Elementary needs to hire a recess/cafeteria aide. This position requires someone who can work either full time (2 hours per day and five days per week) or half time (2 hours per day and three days per week). You must be reliable, good with children, and kind but able to supervise at recess for safety and behavior. You will be both inside and outside during the noon period. Call Linda Ress at 773-0482
If you would be interested in substituting in our kitchen/cafeteria please contact the school at 773-0482. Responsibilities would include assisting in serving meals, helping in the dish room, meal preparation, etc.
Weather News:
Snow will be falling in Indiana before we know it. We want to make sure your children are dressed appropriately for the winter season. Heavy winter coats, hats that cover the ears, mittens or gloves and leather type shoes are good choices. Rubber, leather, or insulated boots are also good. Not only are these items necessary for the winter conditions going to and from school, but are needed for outside recess.
As in the past, we are going to encourage outside recess for all of our students, even though some daily conditions may allow us to only be outside for just a portion of the regular recess time. Of course, should temperatures and/or wind chill become extreme, we will not go out at all during those days. Generally, we will use 0 degrees F as a guideline. Requests from parents for their child to stay inside during cold weather, particularly after an illness will be honored with limitations. However, if these requests become habitual, we will ask that a doctor? statement be obtained in order for a child to stay inside for long periods of time. Medical research has shown that daily periods of fresh air and exercise contributes to a more healthy child, both physically and mentally. Children whose parents will not allow them to go outside will stay in the nurse? office during recess. Teachers have recess duty or"prep' time during recess. We do not allow children to stay in classrooms alone.
School Delays and Closings will be announced on the following television and radio stations: WTTV/Channel 4, WRTV/Channel 6, WISH/Channel 8, WTHR/Channel 13, WXIN/Channel 59, WGRL (93.9), WNDE/WFBQ (1260/94.7), WFMS (95.5), WENS (97.1), WZPL (99.5), WMYS (1430), WGLD (104.5), and WTPI (107.9). The decision to close school is made by the Superintendent. If school is closed or delayed, this decision is usually made by 6:30am. We also encourage all parents to make plans for their children if school is dismissed early, so that children will know what to do and/or where to go. Please note that some stations post delays or closings later than others. Therefore, we suggest that you check a couple of the above listed stations.
A reminder that when we have a two hour delay for school, there is no breakfast served on those mornings. Also, AM clubs do not meet on these days.

Volunteer Data Sheets
A reminder to parents that as part of School Board Policy #3121, an individual desiring to help as a volunteer in Noblesville Schools must complete a "Volunteer Data Sheet." This information will be kept on record to help us best use your talents to help our students. This form will also be used as a permission slip for a Criminal History Records check, required if you plan to volunteer in our schools for field trips and/or other school activities. We have been experiencing long delays in the background check process from the Indiana State Police. Even if you turn your application in several weeks before an activity, we cannot guarantee that it will be processed in time by the State Police to have you approved. We apologize for this situation and hope you understand how part of this process may be delayed. Please remember that this applies for all family members who wish to volunteer or chaperone.
Congratulations to the North Spell Bowl Team!
They competed in Spell Bowl Thursday night at Fall Creek Intermediate School. We are very proud of the way they prepared and competed as a team. They represented us admirably. Facts vs Myths:
Myth - Today's students do not take the hard courses offered in the "good ol?days."
Fact - In a report entitled, "The Condition of Education," 1995, using sixty indicatiors related to preschool, elementary, secondary and postsecondary education, the facts are clear. There has been stunning improvement in public education. Between 1985 and 1995 the percentage of high school graduates taking core courses increased +7percent. Critics who think schools are soft ought to read the textbooks, sit in on the classes, and examine a high school syllabus of classes. The work being done by students and the challenges they are conquering far exceed what was expected when I was in high school in the late 1950?. We should not participate when the media underestimates the accomplishments of our youth.

Safety Drills
All schools in Indiana are required by law to practice safety drills for fire and tornado emergencies. Last school year, we took the safety of our children to another level of protection by having the North staff practice safety drills for additional emergencies such as: bomb threats, security issues, violent intruders, gun threats and hostage situations. We believe that it is important to be prepared for any type of emergency that could threaten the children and adults in our school. Until this time, we have not involved our students in drills other than the traditional fire and tornado drills. However, we believe our students and staff should work together on all safety procedures. We also think that children will feel safer in school if they know that the adults here have planned for and practiced keeping them safe. We will be teaching our children how to react during these additional safety drills in the next few months and want you to know in advance of our plans. The North Elementary staff will make
every effort to continue providing a safe and secure environment. Please understand these drills are not meant to alarm or scare anyone, we are just being prepared as we try to be for all possible emergencies. We have not had these problems at North Elementary and we do not expect to have any serious problems.

Our second of six Noblesville Schools' professional staff development days will be Wednesday, October 11. All elementary students in grades 1-4 will be dismissed at 12:50PM. Students in these grades will be here through their lunch period. PM Kindergarten students will not attend school on this day.

Cafeteria Staff Appreciation Days.....October 9-13.
North Elementary will be honoring our cafeteria staff throughout the week of October 9-13. Our cafeteria staff, Mrs. Martin (Manager), Mrs. Sacket, Mrs. Roudebush, and Mrs. Davis are responsible for planning and preparing our school lunches every day. Mrs. Swart, Mrs. Sutton, Mrs. Winn and Mrs. Brockshus are cafeteria and recess supervisors. We thank them very much for the wonderful job they do every school day.
Great Job Third and Fourth Graders....
We just wanted to let you know how hard our third and fourth graders have been worked on their ISTEP + and Terra Nova test. Super job everyone!!!!!
Cafeteria Notes
North Elementary cafeteria will be doing a Helping Wishes Come True with Kelloggs Cereals. We will be offering cereal along with another choice for breakfast every morning. Cereal bowl lids will be collected and turned into Kelloggs. They will then give up to $40,000 in our schools name to the Wish Fund.
Reminder....
Be sure that you do not include any carbonated beverages in the lunch box. Can you imagine the problems that occur if children bring these to the cafeteria? Picture them hot. Picture them shaken. Also, it is a source of discontentment for other children who are drinking milk or juice and think the empty calories provided by a cola is a better meal choice. This request includes lunches brought in by parents from a fast food restaurant. We would appreciate your honoring this request as we try to feed nearly 300 children each day.
Indiana Crime Prevention Coalition
On October 12, 2000 the Indiana Crime Prevention Coalition will ask children, teens, and adults to turn off violent television programs, not listen to violent music, not go to violent movies, not rent violent videos and not to play violent games. It is sad that this request is for only one day as we try to raise our children in a peaceful world. All of our children would benefit from a violence free environment every day of their lives.
Instead, the day should be a unique opportunity for adults to teach youth conflict management skills, for families to share activities, for communities to talk about violence prevention and plan peaceful events and programs, and for youth to tell government leaders how violence shapes their daily lives.
Fire Prevention Week......October 8-14
This year, Fire Prevention Week is being held between October 8 through October 14, 2000. The Noblesville Fire Department will be hosting an Open House at Station #71, at 135 South Ninth Street, on Sunday, October 8 from 12:00pm until 4:00pm. Citizens of Noblesville and Noblesville Township will be able to tour the station, see the fire trucks/apparatus, and visit with members of our department. In addition, Noblesville residents are welcome to tour the station in their own neighborhood and visit with professional firefighters during Fire Prevention Week.

PTO News.... Reading Late Night
Soon your children will begin a reading reward program sponsored by Pizza Hut. Each month they will have to read a certain number of books or read for a certain amount of time and at the end of the month they will received a coupon for a free pizza. The program runs for six (6) months.
In March the PTO has a party for those who have succeeded in reaching the reading goal for at least five (5) months.
This party is called Reading Late Night and is BY INVITATION ONLY.
In order to be invited the students monthly reading sheet must be handed in to the teacher who will record that she has received it. The PTO goes by these records when issuing the invitations. It is a great party and we want everyone to come, so begin reading!!!!!

Elementary Cross Country Race

A traveling trophy, to be presented to the school with the highest percentage of participants, was introduced three years ago. You may recall that Stony Creek had a great turnout and had received the traveling trophy for the first two years. White River won the trophy last year, and we would like to win it here at our school. This is a fun annual event. Please come and represent North Elementary School.

Welcome to North Elementary school year 2000-2001
North Elementary would like to welcome several new individuals to our staff. We welcome Miss Lisa Strong, third grade teacher, Mrs. Shannon Boyd speech pathologist, Mrs. Mary Kay Steffey first grade teacher, Mrs. Kelley Stacey, Learning Disabilities Aide, and Mrs. Karen Kerlik, media tech assistant.
Please assist us in maintaining a safe educational environment for our students and teachers by stopping by the office FIRST when visiting our school. Visitors are always welcome, but we require that you inform our office staff of your purpose of visiting immediately upon your arrival and pick up a "VISITOR" badge before proceeding to other areas of the building. You will find other entrances of the school locked during periodic times throughout the school day. Thank you for your support with this matter.
Attendance Policy
Please remember to call the school, 773-0482, whenever your child is going to be absent or tardy from school (including doctor, dental, etc. appointments). You can call anytime and leave a message on the attendance voice mail.
All North students who walk to school or are brought to school by parents or sitters, are reminded that they should not arrive at school until 8:30 am. Students who are eating school breakfast may arrive at 8:20 am. Students who arrive before this time cannot be properly supervised by adults. We ask for your cooperation and support with this arrival time request.
Regular school attendance is important and essential for satisfactory student progress. Since learning builds upon previously learned skills, every day a child misses school, he/she will also miss out on learning and fun.
The tardy bell rings at 8:40 am. Students who enter their classroom after 8:4 0am, but before 11:00am will be counted 1/2 day (AM) absent. Students who happen to leave during the school day for illness, vacation, etc. will not be counted absent if they leave after 1:00 pm. Those who leave before 1:0 0pm will be counted 1/2 day (PM) absent. Please contact the office if you have questions regarding this policy. REMEMBER: All prearranged absences must be approved by the principal at least (10) ten days prior to the absence.
