| Walk through the millennium at NIS
Visitors to Noblesville Intermediate School can take a trip back through time - a trip through the last one thousand years.
All NIS students have contributed to the creation of "A Walk Through the Millennium," a look at world history from 1000 to 2000. Posters lining the hallways offer information about people and major events from each decade of the past millennium.
The story of the millennium takes about 1,000 posters to tell.
"We wanted to do something as a school to mark the millennium because it is so significant," said Ms. Patty Beam, who coordinated the project with Mrs. Sue Brady and Mrs. Carol Divine.
Students started to tackle the mammoth project in January. Each homeroom was assigned a specific time period and students were divided into groups to research different years within that period.
Information has come from a number of resources in the school?s media center and from the Internet.
"Initially, we thought we would have trouble coming up with information, but they are finding so much information, the trouble is deciding what information to use," said Ms. Beam.
"The enthusiasm I have seen when the kids find events that happened in their time period has been remarkable," said Mrs. Divine, the school?s media specialist.
Shelly Batt, a parent volunteer, coordinated the display of posters. She measured walls and measured posters to come up with a display plan.
The 1,000 posters, laid end to end horizontally, measure 2,333.3 feet - nearly a half mile.
The students had their first opportunity to walk through the millennium just before spring break.
"We hope students will take some time and read the posters so they will gain a better understanding of events and people of the past 1,000 years," said Mrs. Brady.
